Generally speaking - are updates better right after a fresh install than say after you installed all your favourite apps and got the system just how you want it?

Do yourself a favour and disable automatic updates on your install so your system doesnt randomly reboot due to "critical" updates being installed

Usually, yes. Besides, it's a poor excuse to require a reboot for every other patch which comes along.

sudo /etc/init.d/{g,k,x}dm restart, how hard was that?..

Imagine if Ford did the same thing, yes we know theres a problem with the brakes on the new Focus but were going to wait until people can actaully buy it before we fix the problem...
I neither said, nor implied any of your ramblings.

Re: News - Microsoft readies largest ever security update

Other operating systems require alot less reboots thats is the only point i was making.
vista is better than xp for reboots but still needs some reboots at stupid times.
for example i got a new laptop last week and it had vista SP1. it done like 50updates then a reboot which is ok. then it done after 30 or so then reboot. then it showed just one security update and needed a reboot... then it showed more after that....
plus it hasnt showed SP2 yet. but tbh i cba to get sp2 since ill get 7 soon from the dell upgrade offer.

Re: News - Microsoft readies largest ever security update

I have to admit that it's a little alarming to see that W7 (An OS I haven't been able to get yet.) requires three important patches before it's release.
Beta was available for a hell of a long time, legitimatley

    Bah.
So you'd rather they didnt tell you about the problems?
    Not fix them?
Or fix them before you can get the product and tell you about it?

Why? This is exactly when I'd expect a load of updates to be released. When the OS is new but has been tested by a significant user base.
