Does it matter? Quite often in American fiction media a main protagonist will be English. I actually can't remember the last time I played a game where the bad guys were Russian. Who would you prefer the bad guys to be? They're obviously going to be considered the most "effective" bad guys by resonating most with the minds of the ones developing the games.
The storyline in MW2 is frankly rediculous.
Spoiler alert:
To go from airport massacre to full scale invasion of America is completely unrealistic. As if the Russian government would do this. What would've been more interesting would've been a more personal story of localised warfare, maybe a nuke sourced from pakistan (which is a real concern right now) and a story centred around ex-soviet states hitting Russia. That could be deveolped into a nice unconventional plot with characters to relate too.
unrealistic? stacked with the fact that each level you play a small unit which kills 100's of terrorists? if people want simulation they buy Flashpoint (granted its bad allied AI but still simulation).
as unrealistic as it is i loved the Storyline - it keeped me very entertained.
GTAIV - wasnt that russians killing Americans?
XBOX: BauerPrime
Just wondering - the patch thats being released im assuming is for the Russian version only? And as Georgy has posted - he and im sure many other russians - wont be bothered by the content...so is this patch optional or forced?
I think Nick Farrell writing for Fudzilla got it right when he wrote this about it:

He's also using a poor analogy - Darth Vader was voiced by an American and Obi-Wan was played by a Brit!
Article updated now folks. Sorry about that.
Last night when I posted it (US time) it was still being widely reported that it was indeed banned, and I only saw the Activision statement this morning when I woke up. Trouble with time zones...
