Re: News - NVIDIA kicks off GeForce 300-series range with GeForce 310

More than that it shows just how good the G92 chip was.
The original 8800gt was rushed trough just to blow the 3870 away on performance&cost
And yet that same humble G92 chip has bee heavly tweeked and kept up with the 4850.

When you have something that good no need to retire it, however due to human beings being what they are, a lot of people wouldn't buy it because it's "old" reguardless as to it actual performance.

EDIT: oh and you can probably get a few people to buy the same card twice.

at least the 8800gtx,9800gtx,etc had die shrinks - what exactly is the 210 -> 310 bringing to the table?

Not even a tiny bit as bad as Nvidia, but the integrated graphics on AMD motherboards are based on the previous generation while using the nomenclature of the current generation. Barely even counts, but still.

And how little they've done since 2007.

Re: News - NVIDIA kicks off GeForce 300-series range with GeForce 310

I was talking about he G92 not the 0A65 (that's the GF210 gpu)

This is probably more to do with nvidia just being able to say "look we did release a 300series in nov 09" just on paper.

    EDIT:

Umm yes we have seen ATi doing this before in the past, granted way back in their 9xxx series days.
and in a way it was worse because 8000 series cards which were dx8 got rebrended into low end 9000 series so you ended up with some 9000 being dx9 and some being dx8

There's even some question over the more recent 3200 and 4200 having the same gpu

The HD4200 adds DX10.1 support and UVD2 which the HD3200 does not have and improved power saving features. OTH,this current Nvidia rebrand is the same GPU it seems. Also I am surprised that it wasn't called a 300 series chip beforehand as it is new GPU.

Even the shift from the 2900XT to the HD3870 added UVD,DX10.1 support and introduced a 256 bit memory bus and improved power saving features and a huge reduction in price. Also the RV670 had less transistors than the R600. If Nvidia was tweaking the GPU with some additional features perhaps they could be justified naming it a new series but they simply call the cards a new series even with the same old GPU.

I thought the 300 series would continue from where the 250 series started at least.. I guess they'll start with 310, 320 etc. I'll laugh if people thought the 310 was better than the GTX 295 haha. Nice marketing.

Hey!.. It takes a lot of time and effort to change the stickers on a warehouse stocked full of mid-range cards. Don't be mean.

well since there is no sticker on the cards cooler to say what it is, i think all they need to do is take the 210 out of the box -and presto! OEM 310

Yay! More lies and parlor tricks from NV.

Keep killing what little respect and trust you had left. Idiots.
