the size is wrong, if people go for portability they'll go for a 5" screen, if they want a reasonable size they'll go for 10"+
I can't see it being 7", partly because of the aforementioned reason but also because last time I checked they don't do 1280x720 or 1366x768 in a 7" form.
7" Makes sense to me - it's about the same size as most paperbacks..

Well, it needs to be high enough resolution to give you enough viewing space. The original eee pc had a 7 inch screen and was great due to its ground breaking format. However there is a reason all the successive netbooks had larger screens. High res on 7 inches is tiring on the eyes. Sure the tablet will probably have all that pinching and zooming like the iphone, which is partially tolerable on a phone, but this tablet is not targeting the phone market. Apple already have the iphone there as we all know and in my opinion the iphone is an incredible product. Personally I wonder if the target audience actually exists for a small tablet.
As others have said is a 5 inch tablet (or a 7 inch one) a solution to a problem that doesn't exist?
I for one will keeping an interest in this and am eager for some announcement from Apple. Some hard facts from them could be very enlightening.

I can't wait to see how over priced this is!
The original eee pc 701 had a 7" screen for reasons of cost, battery life, weight, the actual case was 10" and could fit a 9" screen in it (the soon to follow eee pc 900 version)
A paperback book is 8" so enough space for a 7" screen.
I would love a little tablet pc that size, however knowing apple and their pricing strategy, I'd have to sell both my legs and an arm to afford it.
EDIT: ps the XO uses a 7.5" 1200x900 screen
