Re: News - BT undercuts Virgin on super-fast broadband

BT still haven't finished their 21CN upgrade..

    http://www.btplc.com/21CN/Theroadto2...milestones.htm

This brings speeds upto 24Mb (although most LLU providers already offer this).. of course you need to be near the exchange to have any chance of an improvement. I wouldn't expect BT's next super duper 40Mb service to be available for the majority for the next 10+ years.

Re: News - BT undercuts Virgin on super-fast broadband

I think this might be ADSL2+ bonding as opposed to FTTC i.e. two ~20/24Mbps ADSL2+ lines bonded together (which would also mean two line rentals if that's the case). BT are far from the first to do this though - other companies have been doing this pretty much since ADSL2+ surfaced...

Edit: Nope apparently it is in fact FTTx http://forums.hexus.net/hexus-channe...ml#post1861140

How about getting the 8mb infrastructure sorted before 21cn?

Then getting 21cn sorted before all this.

Re: News - BT undercuts Virgin on super-fast broadband

Am I right in assuming other providers (O2/Be for example) using the BT infrastruture will get use of this Fibre aswell? and be able to provide their own offerings?

Just as a headline this looks awesome and well overdue, but by the time BT apply that 20GB cap and several FUPs, you know it'll suck all the fun out of it.

I have no idea when i'll get 21CN - originally it was spring this year but now there's simply no date at all. I couldn't give a stuff about fibre based services as BT won't roll them out whilst i'm still alive no doubt..

Yikes, don't beat around the bush, say what you really mean.

Although I feel where you are coming from orginally I was on the list for later 2009. But now I've been pushed back to mid 2010 (well last time I checked).

Just had a call from the nice telesales man at BT offering all sorts of goodies to move my calls and interweb back to them

When I asked about just ADSL2 never mind a 40mb service, he couldn't give me an answer except to say that they would provide me with a home hub with accelerator . . . wasn't pleased when I told him I'll just take off the bell-wire

I can only envy you big-city guys and your super speeds !

At least you've got some kind of date

I think my tone is justified though - i've lived long enough to know how much dragging of feet over broadband BT has done in this country. Hell, it took a major regime change at BT to get them to do anything about it at all - it took them years to realise they'd make packets on the thing it was utterly stupid given how obvious it was. Even then people we left having to convince them to upgrade exchanges by effectively signing a petition before they'd do it - in my town I ran the campaign and literally leafleted each and every house at my expense and in my own time (because somebody had to get off their arse and do it). So yeah, I will say what I mean thanks matey and rather enjoy being seriously bitter about the dunderheads at BT!

It took years for us to get to 'broadband' and what i see now is us once again being hamstrung by the encumbant telco whilst other european countries got on with it years ago. It's just plain bad for both the consumer and the economy given it's importance.

Don't you have any LLU operators in your area?

I was wrong it is FTTx but as was mentioned before (should have read previous posts before posting myself really) it's only to a few exchanges for now. See if yours is on here: http://www.buckconsult.co.uk/fttx/

Re: News - BT undercuts Virgin on super-fast broadband

The 21CN dates are all made to be broken anyway.

09/10/2006 - BT have set a target date of Q1 2009 for the switch to 21CN for the * exchange
29/03/2008 - BT Wholesale has set an enablement date of 19/05/2009 for their 21CN Wholesale Broadband Connect product at the * exchange
12/08/2008 - BT Wholesale are no longer reporting a Wholesale Broadband Connect (WBC) enablement date for the * exchange (Was previously 19/05/2009)

At least there are 4 LLU's available, most have been there since 2007!!! BT always on the backfoot.
