Fibre right? so will BT make this available even if you don't need a phone line? or is it the usual +£x amount for phone line on top?

Well, you need line rental, you don't necessarily need a call package on top of that as with existing DSL, it's fibre to the cabinet and copper from the cabinet to your house.

Well, if it's using the phone lines I for one ain't likely to get anything like the quoted 40Mb.

With ADSL the most I can expect is 4Mb where I live and I haven't seen anyone replacing the ancient copper from our exchange with fibre so I can't see anything they do improving things to the point that it beats the 20Mb VM I have right now.

Re: News - BT undercuts Virgin on super-fast broadband

It only uses the copper from the cabinet to your house so it doesn't matter how far you are from the exchange or what speeds you're getting now. This has only been introduced to a few places so far so unless they have upgraded your cabinet it won't be available to you yet.
