Re: News - NVIDIA benchmarks GeForce GTX 480 against AMD's ATI Radeon HD 5870

Is nVidia not planning a dual-core version of the 470/480? From the looks of it, they will the fastest card on a single core (given that the 5970 is on two). Not the best value in the top end, and perhaps too little too late, but not quite the biggest flop in history. But not having a dual-core version of the 480, even if clocked down would would likely mean that AMD remain the fastest overall card in most games.

Cool Re: News - NVIDIA benchmarks GeForce GTX 480 against AMD's ATI Radeon HD 5870

@TooNice - The 5870 is a single gpu card. The dual chip card is the 5970.

@Terbinator - Rolling back the nVidia drivers is only useful if you still have a working graphics card which hasn't already been destroyed by the 196.75 drivers.

This 'benchmark' heavily favours the GTX480 as there is very little going on other than tessellation. Once the card has been released and tried with real games, then we'll see how it performs.

You class a grey screensaver as a working card ? Nvidia have sorted out there problem within days, 5/6 months on ATi have not.

Re: News - NVIDIA benchmarks GeForce GTX 480 against AMD's ATI Radeon HD 5870

As a GSOD sufferer I have to point out that I had no such problems with my 4890 or with any of my NV products. The 10.1 hotfix, the 10.2 and the 10.3 betas have all failed to solve the issues. For me the 5870 is a non-functional card.
    Very, very, freaking annoying.

Heh. A very kind offer !
But I'm waiting for 10.3 to see if I can get this to work. After that - RMA time and hope that the next one will be stable.

I wonder what exactly the problem is that's causing it because none of the the 57XX and lower suffer from it do they ?

I never had a moments trouble with my 4890 and the 4xxx series seem to be OK, but there are posts in that thread from owners of all the 5xxx series. Most commonly the 58xx, but there are quite a few 57xx affected as well.

Re: News - NVIDIA benchmarks GeForce GTX 480 against AMD's ATI Radeon HD 5870

Terbs and I are leaning towards some sort of software issue. I've been in contact with AMD/Ati (They got a bit shirty at the end) but they emailed me to say that 10.3 WILL fix my issues. I'm reserving judgement. XFX siad wait and see and RMA if they don't work.
Scary when the machine crashes to dead as a rock from mid-game though.

Hmm, mine basically goes grey screen lines etc but sometimes i can actually continue using the system i.e im on skype to my mates and can communicate with them but just cant see what im doing . So maybe it was a software issue for me too, hoping so because it would be great to resolve this .

Re: News - NVIDIA benchmarks GeForce GTX 480 against AMD's ATI Radeon HD 5870

Exactly the same problem with me with a Asus 5770. It's really annoying, sometimes if I leave it on idle desktop too it just ends up freezing, sometimes when I'm web browsing. If I play games I always have to set it to Windows Classic otherwise the game will keep freezing every few mins. I'm using the 10.2 drivers at the moment. It's not unbearable but it's REALLY annoying, I wish ATi/AMD could sort it out. It's funny because I've also got an AMD processor... Way to go, supporting AMD leaves me with some dodgy bug. But then I guess you could blame it on Windows 7... No idea what the problem is.

Now about Nvidia, really odd how their benchmark turns out. Seems like a total joke to me, perhaps it is a joke and the GTX480 is actually much better? Can't wait to see how it turns out, might enable me to get another 5770 for crossfire

Not even 10 minutes into the game and I got a GSOD, it's funny how there are specific spots that I get GSOD's in though.

    *Sigh*

If you're willing to live with laggy frame rates then yes, you can argue that a GTX260 is enough, but for people like me who want smooth performance and good graphics, not even the HD5870 is enough sadly for today's stupidly demanding games. In STALKER Call Of Pripyat for example you only get a minimum frame rate of 38 and an average of 47 at 1280x1024, when everything is on high. That's about as low as I will accept performance to be for an FPS before it becomes annoying to play, and this is less than a third of the pixels of 2560x1600. We're only using 4x MSAA here too, nothing crazy, and this is ultimately only one monitor, not eyefinity.
If cards like the GTX260 could max games at 2560x1600, stuff like the HD5970 wouldn't exist.
Well, you obviously play different games to me, but like I say, I'm yet to feel limited on a 30" monitor by my GTX260. A lot of the games I have are Source engine games, and they run just fine fully maxed out with 4xMSAA on my 30" monitor.
