So the the main reason to buy one is because its pretty, yet now you have to cover it so it works properly...

Apple had to respond with the building negative effect this whole antenna fiasco was causing and financially speaking this is the cheapest solution compared to a recall or some sort of in shop fix they could be fashioned.
News just in, Apple fixes iPhone reception problem with free condom. Correction, free sheath. Ah well, same idea - protect the users from their own stupidity.
And this cures the problem how ?
They are just saying "Yes we knew about the problem, here have a nice case worth 50p"
They haven't actually addressed the issue.
It makes it so the problem doesn't manifest itself, as the user can no longer short the antenna with sweaty hands.
How long until they introduce kids versions of things?
To screw yet more money out of parents that have to give their sprogs Apple products.
Although they might have to carefully think about naming...
As "iTouch Kids" might put a few people off...

Well they have, because it seems that contact with the antenna (the shiny stainless steel band around the outside) reduces its effectiveness - probably from the bodies own electronic something or other. Breaking the electrical connectivity between the two (in this case with a bit of rubber) stops the problem from occuring.
