    This seems to me like MSI know that the card can reach 1GHz, but they also know the card might only last 6 months or so at that sort of frequency.

    Apparently they managed it with some of their cards. I spotted a review on TweakTown that managed to boot at 1GHz, but only ran stably at 988MHz - which just seems frustratingly close.

    i think the reason they done this with modest overclocking is because they know that not all would do the 1ghz and that its much easier for them to grab a load of cards and change the power regulators and slap on their great cooler and then sell it, rather than adding the extra process of stress testing and cherry picking the cards capable for 1ghz, adds a lot of time and money overall so this is probably the best way.
