Cost I imagine - very cheap to put in a usb controller and ports these days, much more so than a custom port.

Damn, this could be rather annoying, only just bought a http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Logit...on-3-%28PS3%29 as an extra controller for a friends ps3 so none of us have to sit out playing, it's a rubbish controller compared to an official for sure (infact we've even proved whoever is using while playing blur drives slower ) But hell, was a damn site better than just sitting out. I guess i'll find out if it still works tonight.

It's the retailers i feel sorry for, sure they may sell a few more official ones that'll counterbalance it a bit but just think of the amounts of stock out there that they know are now useless.

Do we know whether it's just controllers or remotes as well? (I can't read the full article due to it being blocked at work)

I have a non Sony remote control for controlling DVD/BlueRay play back...

Well given this trend of console makers just bricking your stuff by changing the rules all the time, good thing I am not buying a console anymore. Good for people who don't care but not for me.

Re: FRAGFX V2 and up WORK GREAT - Sony consumer warning -

Hi guys - I noticed they mentioned the Fragfx -

Thankfully All of them work perfectly fine with the new Sony updates

    - the FRAGFX v2, PRO and EVO - work great - as well as the Shark Beta - I use them all - The only one that may be affected and may need an update is the old v1 from 3 yrs ago.

The FragFx is the only reason I play FPS on a PS3 in the first place -

    FRAGFX

Biggest load of rubbish i've read...it's nothing like cheating, I love my fps on the pc (which has way more cheaters than the ps3 will ever have) and to recreate the feeling of playing a fps on a console these controllers are the nearest thing.
I really cant get my head around how's it cheating, MW2 for example I playing much better with the Fragfx but there are players using the normal controller that are 10x better than me...and i'm cheating

We'll have to agree to disagree then.

I regard cheating as anythign that gives one player an unfair advantage over another, that is not part of the game design.

So this includes things such as:

specifically designed to improve/assist with aiming or automate actions - eg "autofire" buttons and mouse/keyboards for consoles, wallhacks, speed boosts, auto-aims etc etc.

There is no issue for offline play..play the game as you wish, hack it to death, use any control system you like, but it is a problem when it comes to online play, as it can ruin the experience for everyone else. Of course the pattern will not always hold true as there will be some truely expert players with a control pad, and players that are not great with a kb/mouse either - and as you say the game is tuned for pads..but it definitely gives an unfair advantage (just because you can kill a cheater doesn't legitimise it), hence my calling it cheating.

What would be ideal is if the game developers could add in some code to detect the use of such controllers online only, thereby allowing them for single player but not for online matches. Heck you could tune it to the point of just banning them from ranked matches..that would be fine. They won't do it though as the gamer take up is so low that its not worth their effort imo.

    Then what about Unreal?
That was coded so you could use keyboard and mouse.
Would it be cheating to use that against normal pad players because it gives them an unfair disadvantage which you discribed as "cheating"

Then what about GT prolouge and playing online with an unofficial steering wheel against normal pad players?...
Unfair disadvantage, so they must be cheating.

    Agree to disagree, I agree!

Racing games have been designed for steering wheels (in most cases), and its an advertised option. Same goes for a game which again is advertised for keyboard + mouse and its actively supported by the developers.

It's still what I would consider cheating yes, but mitigated by the fact people are effectively informed that its a supported option.

At the very least if you don't like the cheating label you could say it's unfair, as it truely is..

So by this logic people who use wheels over the default controller are cheating?, cheating is using codes / hacks to gain a advantage, choosing which control method you prefer to use is not.

Re: News - Sony consumer warning - Your unofficial PS3 controller may explode!

Ok as a last word on this (I don't really want to get into an argument over it, all friends here ) Yes for online competitions that could be considered cheating if it gave an unfair advantage. I don't play racing games so don't know if a wheel can make it easier to play, if the developers design it that way or whatever. Not my area.

I do play a lot of FPS games though and know how much of a difference being able to aim with pinpoint accuracy makes - the typical example with real evidence to back up my claim would be Quake 3 on the dreamcast. For a short period of time PC Gamers were allowed to compete against console gamers on the same server. Result? Console games were beaten time and time again as they simply couldn't match the speed and accuracy of a mouse/keyboard combination.

It's just my opinion anyway, and the fact that I regard it as cheating doesn't affect anyone..and as it happens this update doesn't stop these controllers from working anyway (unfortunately in my view!).

For competitive scenes, competitiors should have the same hardware.

But let's get back on topic. Sony sucks.

So you bought a third party controller last week, this week you update your PS3, and you now seemingly have a "faulty" controller.

Where does the law stand on this? The goods sold are (now) not fit for purpose, could you get a refund?
