Looking at the first graph, I think it's quite amazing (and great) how head to head AMD and nVidia are.

The third graph surprises me a lot. While AMD does, AFAIK, provide more performance on average, I would've thought that Optimus would have swung things in nVidia's favour for the mobile market. Granted it doesn't matter much for desktop replacement laptops (though it's still nice, the GFX card fan seems to switch itself off or slows down enough to be quieter than the CPU fan), but all those mid-range laptops designed with some commuting in mind do benefit from Optimus.

I am not questioning the accuracy of the graphs, but I would have expected, based on the products, that the second and third graph would be swapped.

I always assumed AMD would be better for laptops due to much more impressive power usage figures in their mainstream parts than NVIDIA, especially on idle.

Not really. nVidia's laptop parts are pretty frugal. And it's pretty hard to beat a power consumption of zero when the GPU isn't needed.
