Well that is... Unexpected...
Puts The Big G in a very interesting position within the market... I wonder how the others will react...
I wonder how many of Google's patents Oracle is now in violation of. Actually, buying Moto probably doesn't help in that respect seeing as I don't think Oracle has much in mobile.
It will be interesting how much Moto IPR is actually worth to Google. In the recent Nokia/Apple spat, Nokia only came out trumps to about 1/2 a billion, and Nokia arguably have a lot more IPR than Moto do in the intellectual space that Google need. Whilst there is certainly other IP value in Moto (eg. earlier this year they acquired their own UNIX based OS), much of Moto IP will be in the radio domain.
As for Google partners, why would they be unhappy? They're getting screwed because of possible infringments by Google. If Google have a more robust patent portfolio, then there are fewer openings for litigation against Google and their partners. Plus, I think Google have told them to be happy.... or maybe I should phrase that as Googlr have told them to BE HAPPY....
+1 on the "check date" bit - I too thought this was a late April fool.
As for the edit part - no one has said that el Supremo's de Google were stupid, so getting a bargain is not necessarily a surprise. However, aren't Moto one of the companies that Apple are sueing the a** off of? In which case, maybe it's not going to be such a bargain in the long run?
Hope Google make it very plain that Googlrola (like the name!) are merely another maker, and that Google are spending a lot of time reassuring Samsung, LG, HTC, SE, etc that they're still valued. Maybe, just maybe, having the MotoMob patents will make it easier to defend Android - to the benefit of all the manufacturers.
I was already looking to Motorola for a replacement for my SE X10 next year - probably an Atrix - now, unless Google screw things up, that "maybe" will probably become a "definitely". My first ever mobile was a Motorola, so I'll be returning to the fold.
EDIT: Just noticed that folks are saying that SE are going to drop out. Problem with that is that SE is pretty committed to Android. Only other game they had was Symbian - and that's not a runner. Personally I would have thought HTC were more likely to walk - after all they've got Windows7Mobile to fall back to (assuming Nokia let them have any business).
I really hope we will see both more Motorola handsets available on contract through network operators, and the chance to get vanilla Android handsets in retail as well.
I think this news is likely to make me wait until there are proper Google-Motorola handsets on the market before pushing the button on an upgrade.
Why Motorola? Their phones are so poor. Why not HTC?
Google really need to up their game with Android now, Apple are just picking it apart and improving it far more than Google seem to be able to. The Android house of cards is slowly starting to fall.
Don't agree - the US reviewers have been pretty positive about the later members of the Droid family, and the Atrix seems to have been well received everywhere. Google didn't buy HTC because (a) it's not for sale; and (b) Motorola are pretty much an Android-only shop, (just checked the website and it's showing 4 non-Android to 9 Android-based models), HTC on the other hand do have some cracking 'droid phones, but they also do some pretty good Windows models.
Excuse me, but your ignorance is showing...
Either that or it was a deliberate attempt at trolling - in which case you should be ashamed. You do know that Apple doesn't do Android - or where you meaning that Apple were (according to you) improving iOS faster than Google are bringing up 'droid?
