The site takeover is short impact, it will change and won't be there all the time - we will be tweaking the spec's for this in due course.
We always love feedback with suggestions - feel free to send me a screenshot of what you would change
Just me farting about but this would be puttin more emphasis on the content without affecting the style of the site. just shifted stuff around in PS really rough like but you get the idea. also made a small change to the secondary nav - a few small changes...but again - each to their own...(i removed the takeover....just coz i hate them...)
P.s. Sorry - didnt realise how large i made it!
Have to say I like a lot of the stuff .havoc raises there. Hexus has always had quite a busy look, but the new homepage - particularly around the masthead area - is incredibly distracting. Once I've scrolled half way down so I can only see stories the page kind of resolves into an easily readable layout, so the vast majority of the work needs to be done in the masthead area.
I assume by site takeover DR means the background image ads on the home page? tbh I hated those on the old site too - with my 1440px width monitor I get half the advert text on each side of the screen and it looks appalling. Glad to hear you'll be working on the specs for that - when you do can you please look at inbetween resolutions as well as more common ones, for those us with either unusual monitors or who like working in windowed mode? I'd never abandon Hexus because of a distracting advert, but I might be put off the advertising company by one! If it's not good for the advertiser it's not good for anyone, really

It's the constant challenge which we will face - atleast we don't have LOLSMILEZ advertising - we have advertising of interest.
It's a ground up re-write of the entire site you are seeing there, and it's taken a lot of investment and resource.
It seems that all the advertising effort we put in will get complaints either way

A HPTO (Homepage takeover) is basically the ability to take over the background and background colour on the site - consisting normally of a masthead and gutters which flank the content...basically whats on there now, with the possibility of a variety of display ads (banners) to accompany this.
The banners which can be anything from standard media to RMDA (Rich Media Dynamic Ads) or just a variation of standard Rich media ad's (like those really annoying floating ads, expandable, roadblocks etc etc) depending on the limitations set by Hexus (which thankfully is no rich media from what I can tell).
Its definitely a step in the right direction - dont get me wrong. Just needs a touch of clarity.
**edit**
Just read DR's post. Advertising is a necessary evil - we all know that. You actually use the lesser of two evils by not using RM - so kudos to that. My main issue was the sheer volume of space allowed for the HPTO makes Hexus seem recessive. Believe me - I think I speak on the behalf of most when I say we would rather you advertise to generate revenue and remain the Hexus we all love rather than change to subscription model or worse...vanish! And I completely sympathise with the amount of effort you guys put into it. Doing a site redesign/build is one thing...but when you are your client...you are your own worst enemy too (Been there and got the t-shirt. Your designer must have the patience of a saint! I know how he feels ). On the whole its a good job .
Oh and i hope it shows as a testament as to how highly I regard Hexus by sticking my oar in where it doesn't belong - wouldn't do it for any other site...(not without charging anyways)

It must be hard to balance the needs of the advertiser - getting something as eye-catching and noticable as possible to get their message across - with the desire of the users - having at little distraction as possible from the content they come here for! I certainly don't envy you that juggling act, and that's coming from someone who does communications consultancy as part of their business offerings
EDIT: Just caught this snippet in .havoc's last post:
looks like I'm not the only one caught between membership of Hexus and professional itchy fingers

Love the look of the new site, but how long is the popup going to be there as I seem to get it a lot whenever I open Hexus (don't know if it's anything to do with me deleting cookies or not)
I do know everything, just not all at once. It's a virtual memory problem.
well yeh i have to agree, 1st time i looked as i usually go straight to the fourms, but i clicked the link and thought WTF is that jumbled up mess in front of me, tbh i wont be going back there again.
there is some wierd scan advert down each side, but the left halfs on the right side of the page, and the right halfs on the left, i clicked compatibility view and it was the same, is it really meant to look that bad ?
Capitalization is the difference between helping your Uncle Jack
off a horse and helping your uncle jack off a horse.
On larger screens the advert is fully visible on either side. However, at 1280 wide (same as me) it appears as you described it.
As we've previously said, we'll issue some new guidelines to advertisers to make sure the ads a: look great regardless of viewport size, and b: give them the best results.

i guess you came out of beta at the same time EA does, the wrong time
