Re: News - Nokia announces Lumia Windows Phone handsets

Agree with what was said about the look they do look naff, although thats not the actual unit its a rendered image..

They need this launch to be tight as though otherwise its pretty much the end of the game for Nokia.

I dont think the market is saturated though tbh, I think there is a good hole there for business phones, none of the "geek" of Android or the "Shiney" of Apple but something that works properly in a business environment without the need for extra bits of software and the likes, as long as the new Windows phones type into the exchange server, sharepoint etc then theres plently of space in the market for Nokia..

Re: News - Nokia announces Lumia Windows Phone handsets

My boss uses a blackberry linked to an exchange server and suffered zero hassle from the Blackberry network issue; Same thing for my dad's entire company. The only people that were effected were companies relying on Blackberry to provide email and non-business users. I highly doubt business sales were affected by the network issue.

Even though Blackberry rules the business world I still think Windows Mobile has a good chance of making an impact there, I don't think other smart-phones have managed to threaten Blackberry there.

believe it or not i think iPhone have started to seep into the business world, especially if that business is media based. Even my company have suggested a switch to iPhone next year... barmy if you ask me.

They went with WinMo. That's already a foregone conclusion.

Technically they didn't, they went Windows Phone.

WinMo is the name for the older branch, which is still on going as it has a significant portion of the bespoke embedded market, most logistic systems are based on it, you can also get a myriad of exotic devices all available in IP-whatever kind of packaging for the environment. WinMo is also very flexable at getting to run, the easiest demo of this power is the fact that when the KIRF lot produce yet another iPhonie, they use WinMo underneath, not linux, not andriod, definately not meego. If the price is 0 for each, because your ripping it all off ilegally, its intresting to see WinMo still wins out.

I'd even consider the 710, the price is ridiculously low (EUR270) considering the spec (1.4GHz, 512MB, 16GB). For comparison, Clove have the HTC Radar at £285, which has the same 1GHz processor as the launch handsets (albeit in a unibody chassis and with a front facing camera) with only 8GB storage.
Bear in mind Nokia's price excludes VAT.

That's a load of 24 carat sense - especially that last bit. Heck, if it wasn't for relying on iTunes then I'd consider a 4S. And by all accounts, WM7 is pretty client neutral (i.e. like Android it can be a flash drive when connected to a PC).

Especially since, by all accounts, the latest webOS phones were very good for at that "slotting into the company" trick. Well, up until HP decided to kill them off. But you're right - if any phone would be able to seamlessly do that "business" think, then it'd be a Nokia powered by Microsoft software.

Now all Nokia need is a sober looking black model for the biz folks, and a funky white one for the droolers in PR.

Far from the truth. Nokia have a huge presence is developing countries and eastern Europe. They still shift a huge amount of units.

Nokia's reputation for being a smart phone maker is already at a low. This launch is not to enforce their smart phone status but to create a fresh new start. Nokia and Microsoft alliance is like a new phone company and this is their first launch. This launch is important because it needs to show that Nokia still make brilliant phones and that Windows is a brilliant phone platform and together they make a good combination.

If it fails Microsoft will go back to its main stream software and Nokia will probably concentrate on its markets where it still rules - Budget handsets and developing countries.

Re: News - Nokia announces Lumia Windows Phone handsets

A few of the "family" users (read bosses sons, daughter and son in law) have all gone iPhone4 purely because "I want an iPhone" without actually know if it does what they need/want to do, its more a fashionable bit of kit as far as I can see.
    Blackberry, needs its own software.
WebOS, not actually played with a WebOS phone, only dabble I had was the few days I had a TouchPad.

Windows Phones have Outlook, Excel and Word, thats pretty much all the guys where I work will need, seemlessly, no extra apps or any pissing about, problem is I dont deal with the phones and when I was asked I said, WM phones or HTC/Android. Sales manager put his foot in the conversation and the sales team ended up with BB's, 3rd party company tried to setup the BESExpress on 2 of our servers and it appears that it wont work with our system, Sales manager then comes to me and asks why nobody asked or listened to me ACE!

Re: News - Nokia announces Lumia Windows Phone handsets

Just spent a few minutes looking back over reviews of old Nokia smartphones - and they pretty much can all be summed up as "great hardware running crap software". Certainly that was my experience with my much-loved N95 - hardware-wise it was a great little device, unfortunately that Symbian abortion did it no favours.

Looking at some of the video reviews available I've got to say that I'm quietly impressed - okay it doesn't have the flash of the SGSII, but looks pretty darned decent never the less. I'm assuming that I'm not alone in going to Android because Nokia didn't have anything even halfway decent in the N-series, so maybe we'll see WP7 gaining ground at the expense of Android?

Brewster101's point is also well made - that there's a deal of iPhones sold merely because folks say "I've got to have an iPhone". Well, I'm thinking that the 710 - with the covers and especially the free Nokia music service - have got to be in with a shout there, (unless you're a collector of apps).

Still got a Nokia - a 2330 - as my "office" mobile, and it's a very dependable decent piece of kit. So if the Lumia's carry on that "dependability" then I'd be foolish not to consider them. And I don't install a lot of apps anyway, so the relatively poor selection for WP7 isn't really going to bother me.

    Interesting times ahead?

Re: News - Nokia announces Lumia Windows Phone handsets

It has the feel to me of 'too little, too late' - I am biased because I've just switched from Nokia to Android and am absolutely blown away by the Samsung Galaxy SII. Windows phone has me mildly interested, but not enough to consider it seriously. I guess there is some serious interest out there. At least, Nokia is hoping there is!

All a bit "meee tooo" really. Nothing new, original, clever, or stylish.

OK, it probably all works, and the nokia maps thing isn't a bad thing to have, but I can't see anyone breaking down doors to get this during a serious consumer slump.

I was going to go for a Samsung Note, but I will wait a few weeks and try this out. I'm not an Iphone fan so it will be between the Note and the Lumia for my next phone.
I've really enjoyed the Desire that Ive had for 18 months, I'm currently having a play with the SGS2 but its all a bit samey not the big leap I had when I went from the Nokia N78 so I actually look forward to trying out something new to me.
