Update: Got a phone call from Farnell earlier today, the guy didn't come out and say it but it seems like they have a backlog of these issues to sort out, and probably aren't used to the volume of support calls, which is understandable. I'll be receiving a replacement tomorrow via UPS and they're collecting the defective one. Farnell, of course, aren't to blame for the faults though.
Some amount of roughness is to be expected with the first released version of what's basically a development board, but I can't help feeling this was completely avoidable. I'm also not blaming the folks at RasPi either, it could be them, the MFR, communication between the two or a combination that's mostly at fault. However, I suspect, as has been suggested elsewhere, that after the first problems with the MFR soldering on the wrong type of Ethernet adapter* that the act of replacing them could have introduced some faults, and they weren't tested again afterwards.
*It may be different for large-scale production, but AFAIK you usually source the components yourself and supply them to the assembler?
Either way, here's to hoping they bring production hope in later batches...
I'm expecting one in the coming weeks, I hope there are no issues with it, it's taken ages to get an order in!
Even if you do, it seems they keep a few behind for replacements anyway so you shouldn't have to wait long if something is wrong.
Mine arrived on Monday!
Further then booting RaspBMC I haven't really had a chance to play with it, maybe next week
