72Mbps downstream compared to roughly half of what's offered on DC-HSDPA seemed like a decent jump to call it 4G to me.

From the links you have linked 4G LTE is going after 1Gbps which we won't get anytime soon I think...

That's why I was confused by the 4G branding, I did some reading into 3G/LTE/4G a while ago and really didn't expect what's officially known as 4G to be out any time soon.

Sure, it makes sense to call it 4G because of the large jump in speed (plus, it's not compatible with 3G), and who knows maybe 4G will be known as 5G when it's released to avoid further confusion?
