News - BT Infinity speed increases for no extra charge

I thought mathematicians and physicists have been rather successful at making the concept of infinity larger, by using sets, with the paradox of the grand hotel being a good example. Alex's Adventures in Numberland wrote about it quite well, if you fancy a read about maths for some reason.

Quick update - just phoned BT to get the upgrade..it seems that existing customers do need to phone up to request it, it won't be automatic.

Apparently we will all get an email over the next few weeks explaining the process - but you can call up earlier and sort it out if you want.

I questioned the new contract and was told that absolutely nothing has changed on my contract, but they will just extend it to 18 months from the day that you upgrade.

Winning solution if you ask me ;-)

Meanwhile I've been paying £20 - £30 for the past 5 years for < 2 Mb/s. It's clear BT aims to be "fastest" by giving more speed to those who already have enough, while doing nothing about the awful speeds outside of the cities.

Well I've requested my free upgrade. Will post again in a few days when I find out exactly what speed I get. They did estimate 47Mb / 10Mb, but then when I first ordered they estimated around 25Mb and I get 38Mb at the moment

BT Infinity was AFAIK rolled out first to areas where no broadband was available, followed by where ADSL is slow and no cable, followed by everything else really; it's still not available here.

However, Infinity should be here September time but the VM upgrade is between Oct12 and Jul13, but IIRC it said simply Jul13 last time I checked - maybe BT's upgrade has forced them to be more vague? Either way, it's between 60/6 VM post-upgrade, or BT 76/19ish so it doesn't really change things.

Even with a fair drop from quoted, BT should still be faster, especially upload. But does anyone know how to get an idea of what actual speed you'll get based on distance from the box? We're about second-from-best-case really, box-pole-pole-house.

If you manage to defy physics and get fast internet connectivity over a long distance, at a cost of less than 100k per property, then go ahead!

Well there is no way to know what your actual speed is, as it is not just affected by distance but also by things like the number of other people on the same exchange, line quality etc.

In theory though you should get close to top speed.

Nice to see BT getting back up there, really good for current customers! Lets hope this is a "free" upgrade and not what VM have done, oh yeah we will double your speeds for no fee, then 2 weeks later announce bills going up around 15%!.

Maybe VM will increase their speeds again now that BT are besting them!

According to another thread on here, plusnet have already been running 80/20 tests for interested customers before this announcement came out.

Well my exchange went live on 31/3/12, I called Talk Talk today asking about the 80/20 service, the lady told me that it will go live in June. I then said that BT were offering 80/20 now for a similar price now.

She then offered me 40/10 Fiber, line rental and the Plus package for £33 a month, then going to £38/month when the 80/20 Fiber service goes live June.

I get anytime calls + unlimited downloads, so wasn't a bad deal.

First off, it's not a "free" upgrade because (according to what's written above) you're locked into them for another 18 months. Although unless their service is utter crap, then I can't see that being a big deal to a lot of people.

Secondly, my VM bill is going up by less than 4% - and most of that's due to price increases passed on from Sky. So I'm getting my "free" upgrade for low cost.

Lastly, agreed BT are faster on uploads, but VM still have 'em beaten on downloads (76 v's 100/120). But I'm in agreement that I think we'll see some announcement from VM in the next two weeks, since it'd be unlike them to allow BT to have a PR coup for too long.

Agreed - and looking at other forums it seems to be a common complaint. That said, my parents are in a small village near nothing significant, but they're getting their Infinity well before me (and I live in a town about 10 miles away from them), although there's no date for Infinity for my locale, merely a "register your interest" link.

It would have been nice to have had something to put up against VM (Sky for TV, BT for broadband), but at the moment that's not happening - thanks a bunch BT!
