Not really! I should do more, typically I back up important folders and documents like my uni work onto usb sticks but not everything.
Nah, no need. All my "important" data such as documents are stored in a dropbox folder, and everything else is redownloadable. Backups for personal use are overrated.
Git for my PhD stuff.
Daily rsync to a btrfs snapshotted storage drive for everything else (soon to be ZFS because btrfs is naff in comparison).
My most important data is usually in three distinct locations.
Windows Home Server (£25) + HP Microserver (£130) = Joy
Add docs and photos are synced to a 100 Gb cloud account (TrendMicro SafeSync—rubbish client, but cheapest storage which you can get a massive cash back on via Quidco).
System drive is mirrored to a service partion on the data drive weekly by Acronis TrueImage.
Does that include a daily backup agent on the GF#s laptop that means when I drop her laptop I can put in a new drive and she doesn't notice?
*nix rules, but when MS get it right (admittedly, not often) they get it really right WHS1 is just awesome software for someone who can't be arsed doing at home what they do at work. Fit and forget, it just works. [Yeah, I don't trust the remote access either, use linux ssh tunnelling for that...]
Yup, the important stuff nightly to an external drive.
Should really set up weekly DVD backups as an extra layer of security, but haven't got that far, yet.
Did when I got my first PC but then got complacent and got burned many times when either hardware or windows got corrupt (probably both). Since then I backup roughly every 2 or 4 weeks to my NAS or when there's been a big change. I do like to burn to DVD as well (mainly documents, music & pics) simply because hardware can fail.
For the average joe public who buys a ready made pc or laptop, most manufacturers install backup software as part of the bloatware and when first used there will be some warning or setup wizard telling them to make a backup. But it's amazing how many people ignore it or don't even realise they've got a recovery partition.
