Anything is certainly possible from a company that thinks putting a rootkit on people's PC's because they had the temerity to play a CD they'd bought was a good idea.

Why was my comment censored ???
Do you think Sony doesn't know that consoles can get modded ?
Do you think the general public don't know that consoles can be modded ?

I imagine because it avoids legal issues for Hexus if they were found to be hosting content promoting something which in some jurisdictions is illegal.

Has this not been mooted for years? I recall this back in the ps1 days that they were planning on banning 2nd hand/used disc sales? Another reason I do not own anything sony, ps1 being the last

Good point, and one missed by those folks saying that "Steam is the answer". Although I've made use of Steam it's only been for "budget" titles - I wouldn't buy a "mainstream" title from Steam exactly because you own nothing (you're granted a user-locked license that's not transferable apparently). I'm an old school guy who prefers to have something physical.

I wasn't looking at a PS4, but for folks who are surely this could be a major turn off. Especially if Microsoft don't follow suit with the Xbox720 (or whatever they call it). I'm not wholly convinced that it's legal in the EU anyway - maybe someone needs to "drop a dime" to them on this (and the non-optional DLC that the publishers seem to be favouring - e.g. Ubisoft's uPlay keys that are required for online play)

Career status: still enjoying my new career in DevOps, but it's keeping me busy...

Re: News - Sony looks at disc-tag technology to block use of pre-owned games

Sony writing their own death warrant then I see. If they use this to block the sale of pre-owned games I doubt they would have a very strong developer or consumer base for the PS4.

The only way I see this working for them is if every game disc has a pre-programmed code for one time PROFILE registration which is entered on first boot up. Then Sony is free to retail additional codes for a small premium, thereby effectivly profiteering on the pre-owned market. This is then passed back on to the development teams (less a few pennies for Sony and the Publishers)

If it allows more games to be made and the quality improves, I wouldnt be complaining, just as long as the new codes arent too much.
