"Gen-Four" soo everything from before the PSX / Saturn / N64 doesn't count anymore?
What about my old Mega-Drive, Snes, Master-system, NES & Atari 2600? I even have an old Phillips Videopac G7000
I really hope he's wrong. With the PS4 it's a bit more debatable since we didn't get the PS2-loading feature on the PS3. However, the current XBox (360) plays XBox titles, so it'd be a bit of a wrench if the XBox720 can't play the existing titles. I surely can't be the only one with an appreciable library of "well loved" titles who's going to be royally p'd off if they can't use those on the new console while waiting for something decent "native/next-gen".The next generation “gen-four” consoles from Sony and Microsoft are “unlikely” to feature backwards compatibility according to a senior Electronic Arts executive.
Actually, I'll go further, a '720 that couldn't do '360 titles might persuade me to hold onto the existing '360 and shift my main game playing platform to PC instead (or even SteamBox if that's up and running properly).
Not that I'm at all interested in any of the sports titles that the rest of the article was covering.
On the PS3, you need to buy a Ninja USB and be on CFW 3.66 to play PS2 games.
The USB stick costs £30!
Just want to add that the 360 does play some 360 titles but the support is pretty poor due to each title requiring MS to write a customer emulator for each one. (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of..._with_Xbox_360). A good example is Rallysport Challenge - number 1 is supported but number 2 is not (which was the better game!). I've got a lot of original xbox games I can't play on my 360
Yeah this 'gen 4' reference makes no real sense!
Anyway, early leaks suggested there would be backwards compatibility IIRC, but that's the sort of thing that gets cut back at the 'how can we make it cheaper' stage - emulating the PS3 or 360 well would likely require hardware, which would add considerably to the BoM. Recent leaks haven't hinted at such hardware AFAIK, and although that doesn't guarantee anything, we might be looking at Xbox-360 deal, or nothing at all.
Good backwards compatibility would be nice, but I'm not sure I'd be happy with an extra £100 or so on the RRP because of it.
I think this backwards compatibility lark always gets an over-reaction. If you own XBOX 360 games, then you must already own an XBOX 360. Keep it. Simple right?
It's not hard to plug BOTH machines in. Heck, use a HDMI swither to keep cables tidy and a Power Splitter for the PSU so you don't have two big ugly transformers clogging up behing the unit.
Eventually in a few years the only games you'll buy and play regularly will be newer gen (a.k.a Gen Four??) titles so you can relocate the 360 to a siblings room then.
Not at all interested in backwards compatability - people made a big deal of it when the PS3 came out, but it was a non issue for most the people I know who bought one.
If it doesn't play SSX Tricky, it's not worth getting.

There speaks someone who's never had to justify a piece of tech to 'er indoors. The why do you need a new one when the old one works fine? deal.
Three possible approaches to the backward compatibility on the XBox (assuming that the 720 won't run 360 games):
1. Take the Xbox->360 approach and come up with a list of "approved" games. Use an emulation layer (to be supplied) to port the games and then put them up - for free - on XBL. You can then download the title and use the XBox360 disk to "license" it when you want to play it.
2. Some kind of "XBox720+" that was more expensive, but had the needed extra hardware to do 360 emulation included
3. Derivative of #2, but instead some extra box that you could buy that would allow 360 titles. Although I'll freely admit that there maybe a slew of reasons why this isn't "do able".

Not on the current PS3 but the early ones did as far as i can remember?
Emulation is a benefit in early stages of ownership as it allows customers to play their back catalogue of games without having to shell out for all new ones right away.
Of course the companies want you to buy all new to increase their revenue but its not practical for most customers to do that.
As the time of ownership increases and new game ownership increases its less likely to be an issue
They might end up doing what Sony did with PS Network - make older generation games available to download. Although they were PSOne games. So that would mean PS2 games on PS4. Looks like Shooty got his wish...

sony ended up removing backwards combatibility from the PS3 as it was shown to be the least used feature!
agreed they should just add older games to the market place to buy them for download
