Actually I'll take issue with that statement - Hexus articles tend to be well reasoned and interesting. Sure, they get things wrong on occasion, but that's an occupational hazard of journalism.

If you want to see "pit writing" then there's plenty of other sources - The Register in my book is notable for being in the "tech tabloid" school.

Guys you should consider not using Yahoo mail. They scan your emails and sell your info to advertisers. Sorry if you feel this is off topic but just thought it was a good thread to mention this in!

Which free email provided DOESN'T do that? How else do you think you "pay" for the service if not by being exposed to ads? Although generally they don't "sell your info" to 3rd parties they just use keywords derived from your email to target the ads that are live in the pool towards users who might appreciate them more. Humans are not reading your email word for word - can you imagine how impractical that would be with the billions of messages sent every day?

If you want ad-free secure email then buy your own domain (very easy), rent a VPS (very easy), secure it (a tiny bit challenging) and setup your own mail server (not that hard), create some certificates and encrypt your email (reasonably easy).

Of course that takes a lot longer, costs a lot more and is far more prone to failure unless you rent quite a few VPS and setup your own distributed email system.

    .....
Well, if you're a Sky customer, for instance, in the small fortune you pay to Sky every month to provide services, one of which is mail and has, of course, just migrated to Yahoo mail.

Essentially they have read our mail for years - they just called it spam protection

GMX. Also don't be stupid. No one said humans were reading it word for word.

Well yes, but there's a difference between scanning it, classifying it as spam or not, putting it in the relevant inbox and not storing any data on you, and on the other hand, scanning your mail, building a detailed profile on you, and either using it to target you with ads, or far worse, selling the data/profile to someone else to do with whatever they wish.

Hmm, that sounds a bit overblown to me - surely for all but the most paranoid one of those dedicated "mail hosting" services would be good enough?

Agree though that getting a domain package is a damn fine idea. I've got a .com and a .co.uk and I get a slab o' web space (which has digital cobwebs on it at the moment) and 1000 email accounts for my monthly fee. Which means I can give everyone in the family a couple of addresses and even start generating "disposable" accounts that can be used for registrations etc where there's a danger of spamming.

I'm using 1&1 as my host provider and the only adverts I've had as a result of my emails have been from 1&1 themselves since I'm a customer. So while I've got the option of spam filtering, I'm reasonably sure that there's no commercial bots trawling my missives

Well that thing you mentioned about "disposable" accounts is a good idea. I do a similar thing, creating alias addresses with my gmx account. It's also a good way to minimize your email account getting hacked into. Because you can't actually login with the alias address. So they'll be wasting their time trying to get into that, which sorta doesn't exist. You know, as they don't actually know your proper email address. But I don't actually use this method. Reason is that the default reply address from my email client is the account address, which causes confusion. Though maybe I can fix that with some settings...

    Ooh, that's sneaky ... I like it!

Actually I've got a couple of mail forwarders in place - mainly for my missus because people kept misspelling her mail address. It didn't occur to me to use those forwarders as a way of obfuscating the real address.

if MS via Skype reads every message and URL within the programme , and follows url`s , then reading emails is very very easy.

Ha yeh it's a good tactic I use alias's to sign up to sites I'm not sure I can trust. If spam starts flowing in at any point, then I just delete that alias and the problem is gone

The kicker then is that the flip-flopping is dependent entirely on opportunity and not on uncertainty. One reason why all humans have their price stamped across their forehead since the exhange of one's 6th sense for the 5 senses of malleability - when one had acquired thoughts. And when it come to thoughts, it is available in 2 flavours, namely The Past or The Future, The Present being devoid of thoughts, The Present being the nemesis of The Repetitive Tentacle of The Bookie, Quackery & Handler, whose mantra is Repeat Prescription.

For the very reason given above, all human behaviours are Of Dichotomy and our behaviours, which are not material, are thusly structured because there is no material limit to a [non-materialised] behaviour, human dichotomies being co-latents and co-limiters. Using the example in this "News Report", Control is not merely for its freaks, Control happens to be the [tethered] latency of Abandonment. This is because a Control Freak never, ever, controls itself, either firstly or last. Such is the Abandonment which is why every Control Freak will be exposed via its Abandonment, sooner or later, Control being Abandonment suppressed with Abandonment being Control expressed much like Masculinity is Femininity suppressed with Femininity being merely Masculinity expressed. Or perhaps it is the other way around. And the overly developed of brain 'fink eet knows everythingss jest becuz they would like to materialise an Alien on their visit to Mars after watching some Trekking imagination on their advanced, a new vun every 6 months, PhonyPoddyPaddy, or g_d forbid, zer Kollider.

One reason why in order to placate the bewildered and confused, "Yahoo" added the prioutetting sweetener of, "…which Yahoo! uses to deliver product features, relevant advertising, and abuse protection." Of course we believe you, Duckie, even though the quacks won't. Are humans this stupid? No toots, not the toothfairy part about caring for you but the part where you'll [have to] go with the flow, regardless. Not when innateness is the taboo/reality/true-authority within which ensures that you won't jump off a 10 storey building becuz you have been told that you have zero choice by the Infinitiser who says he cares for you. So sez Uncle Billy und hist myriad of Zist, Zat und Zer Others. Ja, vy zon't you go up und see him sometime, the joker seldom being hard and all because Cruelty damages overtly whilst Comfort damages covertly, Cruelty being Comfort suppressed with Comfort being none other but Cruelty expressed. Or ist eet zer other vay around. Whatevet it may be, it is merely another nutter out to convince its mesmerised salivates that Bob's yer Uncle.
Man I got lost somewhere in that second paragraph.. Maybe it's my lack of skills that can't seem seem to figure out exactly what your point is. But would you mind summarizing it for me?
