Re: News - Apple iPhone 5C ‘budget’ model is £469, iPhone 5S from £549

Doubling the cpu performance isn't exactly difficult since the A6 is running half the cores at just over half the clockspeed of the current competition (1.3GHz dual vs 2.3GHz Quad)
I originally saw a 5x claim which would fit with them catching up with everybody else but this since dropped to 2x which is a bit weak.
So i'm assuming the A7 is still a dual core design ?

Does the 5s have 4Gigs of ram ? if not the 64bit like on the desktop is a waste of time that throws away compatibility for no performance.
Are they going to fork ios7 to a 32 and 64bit versions ? same with all apps that'll have to be recompiled ?

It'll be interesting to see how this offloading differs in performance from other tech (dual 4-core SoCs, Tegra etc). One thing you can always say Apple does it make things feel slick, so perhaps this will feel faster than the X cores at Y MHz normally does.

I just don't get the market... the 5S is the normal incremental upgrade from Apple. I'm sure we're all familiar with the jokes about Apple phones and mortgages, but at that price?... Seems high even for Apple, and 700 quid for the 64GB version?...

The 5C makes even less sense. The Apple fanbois will just upgrade as they normally do to the 5S, and if you are looking at your first Apple would you really blow Sammy S4 money on it? (based on P4U SIM free S4 @ £520).

I'm sure it will sell, but you are paying an awful lot for the label and ease of integration with the rest of you Apple gear.

Think I'll wait for the Nexus 5. With a bit of lucck it'll be sub £300, minus trade in from my good condition S2 (currently offering around £115) and that's less than £200 for Google's next gen phone, unlocked, and £7.50-£10 a month contract on giffgaff - that's more like it.

In my eyes a 'budget' phone would be under £275, but that's from my point of view.

It's still an expensive phone which I feel hasn't got enough good quality features to make me want to buy it. Think I'll stick with my iPhone 5 for now and then switch over to Android in the future.

Nokia was my immediate thought when I saw the 5C.

I've moved away from iphones now (4S -> Note2 and there's no return) - but I did prefer the 3GS casing to the later ones,
and that's what the 5C has returned to.

Apple's shares fell following the announcements and closed 2.3% below their opening price.

you can buy an unlocked 16gb Samsung Galaxy S4 for less than on Amazon that so I for one won't be giving Apple any money any time soon.

Re: News - Apple iPhone 5C ‘budget’ model is £469, iPhone 5S from £549

Just checked what I paid for my SIM free S3 on launch day and it was just under £500. In which case the 5C/5S pricing isn't actually that bad. What gets me though, is the continual focus that the coloured ones are "budget" models when the pricing clearly indicates that Apple's thinking is that that "C" means "Colored", NOT "Cut-price". So less than £100 surcharge for the metal finish is actually reasonable. If this perception of the 5C as the "budget" model continues then I'll suggest that perhaps Apple will be forced into a small price "realignment" to get it to sell.

Would this incline me to buy one? Nope, my S3's replacement will either be a Samsung, Sony (Android) or Nokia (WP8). I'm not willing to accept the limitations that come with an iPhone and, to be brutally honest, I don't think that the 5C does colour (sorry "color") shells as well as Nokia do with theirs. Although final judgement will wait until I've seen a real one.

Now if you excuse me, I've got to go take a lie down ... being in the position of defending Apple's latest toy is very taxing!

Career status: still enjoying my new career in DevOps, but it's keeping me busy...

There is no fragmentation here - at least not in the way that for example, android suffers from.

They still have the same OS version over all their current + last 2 generations of devices (ios7 is available for the 4/4s), same screen ratios, *enough* performance from even their cheapest model (4s now) to run all of the current apps....no real fragmentation here.

They just have 3 devices now - cheapest (and best looking) iPhone - the 4S. Plastic one for those who like bright colours - the 5C. Premium for those who want the latest and greatest - the 5S. All will run the same OS, Apps, configuration etc. The sensible choice there is actually the 4S, but I am not sensible So will be upgrading to the 5S at some point in the next month.

Certainly wasn't a great event or launch for Apple, and its a poor update to the 5..but there is nothing else of interest in the market at the moment anyway, it's pretty stagnant so they are not the only ones.

Wishing/waiting for someone to come in and shake things up a bit so we have choice other than Apple (getting boring), Android (a complete mess and still boring), and Windows (tiny userbase/tanking platform).

Apple or Google have the power to revolutionise but neither seem to want to at the moment..ios7 was Apple's chance combined with some new hardware, but not ready yet. Another 12-24 months maybe!
