Re: News - Nvidia unveils GeForce GTX 780 Ti - the Radeon R9 290X killer?

Do most of those commenting here actually have the budget for either of these? I feel like I have slipped back a few years to when AMD was releasing expensive cards barely anyone cared about. Having the fastest card doesn't really matter if it costs too much. The real relevance that AMD had discovered once upon a time was to have a very good offering at a reasonable price. They put out cards in the 200 to 400 range that were their fastest single GPU cards and we relevant. Their higher end cards at those times were then dual GPU cards, now... the new offering with the new tech after 2 years of nothing... is at the price of a dual GPU card. I really don't think we should care and I guess many don't besides curiousity on the full details. Beyond that... I'll just forget the r9 290x exists similar to my not giving a damn about the gtx 780/770 and titan.

Either of the companies can put out the fastest card. They could put out a severely over-clocked r9 290x and call it r9 2uber90x priced at $2000 if they wanted (the titan was something like this). At some point the price should make the card irrelevant to the majority of gamers.

Nvidia GPU's Always kills any AMD GPU card. The Nvidia knows how to get the active and potential buyers/ customers. no offense but i started out with AMD GPU's before but when i tried Nvidia I never went back to any AMD GPU's anymore.

What I learned from this thread: Nvidia offers the most powerful cards, but AMD provides the best bang for your buck. Is that correct?

Depends on what games you play; they are fairly close and with some games amd has the edge; I'm impartial, my next card will be from which gives me better for what I want. I'm waiting to see what the 290x and ti do; I will say that Nvidia's lower power consumption is a big plus, especially when coupled with reduced noise too. I'd give up a little performance for something that doesn't sound like it's gonna take off.

^ this and knowing nvidia, they will give the 780Ti a very high price point which no one in their sane mind will afford.

True... Just not usually by a card in the same series.
I wonder if the titan will come down in price now.

Meh. OK the top end cards give bragging rights, but the mainstream buyer wants a good bang for buck card in the £100 to £250 range.

Seems like Nvidia is a bit afraid of AMD.

I don't think it will rule AMD, with this card it will be on pair or maybe not. who knows. R9 Has a killer specs, time will tell.

Yeah I would be cursing nvidia if they then released a card that was faster that the titan and cheaper also if I had purchased a titan or 2.

Still the fastest card on the market in general is the 7990 and it might end up better value than the 290x and 780ti as long as AMD dont raise the price massivly when they release the 290x.

Why are people harping on about saving power when they are running 2 top eng GPU's with 4 hard drives 32 gig off ram and a massivly overclocked chip?? What difference is 10 watts power saving going to make???

    Answer: 10 watts
    (sorry, couldn't resist)

Hopefully the release of this card will see price cuts to the rest of the 7x0 series that are currently way overpriced compared to AMD's R9 rebrands. I'll take a £250 770, please.

I'm not sure if there's any point. The 780/780OC/780Ti is already insanely powerful, so a dual-780 GPU card would only be of use to the tiny number of people buying 4K monitors who need the extra push in the frame rate (and I guess they're the only people who could afford it, too!). It's not going to make the slightest bit of difference to people using the resolutions that the biggest cards already handle, and we're at the end of a two-series cycle. The same people who'd be the potential customers would be the ones who know they won't even have a full 12 months of bragging rights before a new series is upon us, perhaps making better use of DX11.1 and 11.2 effects than Kepler cards ever did and no doubt with other new display technology too.
