No. No they are not. They aren't. No.
I picked up my original X box 360 for 300 quid from Hamleys and that came with 3 games. And at the time of release, pc graphics weren't much better, if they were at all. The ps4 and xbox one are so far behind in graphical capability, yet they're charging 350 gbp plus for them.

Agree with you over the SteamBox - or more specifically SteamOS - though. Here's hoping devoutly that Valve don't screw it up - Microsoft and Sony really need some serious competition (and no I don't include Nintendo with their warmed over Wii).
It's the principle both consoles can't run every game at 1080p - and they should be able to. And have APUs capable of it. Sure 4k isn't affordable to the average person yet, but some cards have potential to run games in 4K. I think it's disgraceful how neither console can every game in full 1080, given how long it's been around. I think in terms of features for price, xbox wins it for me. For performance, obviously the PS is better.

Forza5. But MS's attitude to USB wheels means I'll stick to Gran Turismo and Driveclub for my console driving.

Touring car championships have been around for at least thirth years, but my beemer wouldnt run in a race. not without some prep and some development. give them time, once they've worked out how to code for the 4th gen console im sure itll run everything in 1080p.

dont get me wrong, im not saying it isn't important. consoles and football for me are the only things that i can tell the difference in quality. so its vital that they work out how to do it. im sure they will

the rest of your comments, maybe. but overpriced? Gimme a greak. A 4K gaming card costs more than a ps4. A PS4 is a COMPLETE system, yet one of these ridiculously overpriced Video cards cost more than even the rest of a gaming PC.

as far as gaming goes, the consoles are fine. They will allow playing games that won't come to the PC, worth it. If you are considering a new video card the latest and greatest will cost more than a console, so there's that.

Xb1 costs $500 and is weaker. It's not really anywhere near my shopping list.

I do agree that consoles have much better support, and for that reason I would buy an Xbox and a PS4 so I can have the exclusives. Mantle will hopefully be a game changer. And also, a 290 is less than a PS4.

290 is more commonly more than a PS4, in the states at least. It's $399 suggested retail? Being new it's often higher. At least AMD pricing that at the price of a console makes it not look so bad but nvidia and AMD don't seem to consider it a comparison people would make. In my case I would go for a ps4 easily before I go for one of those GPUs. I often think they are the ones hurting the PC market with their prices, but the lower end GPUs aren't so bad.

I have hopes for mantle as well. When 20nm hits though things should get even more exciting.

As other posters have said, the main positive effect that the PS4 & Xbone will have is on the quality of PC games, i.e. easier to port, so better quality. Hopefully.

Re: Features - QOTW: What excites you most about Xbox One?

    As others have written, nothing.

Both the Xbox One and the PS4 are nothing worth getting excited about.

If they could comfortably push at least 2560x1440 then they'd be at least somewhat interesting, but as it stands they can't even do a comfortable 1920x1080. We're looking at another generation of upscaling.

I just hope that the Steambox can give both Microsoft and Sony a run for their money and force them to lower game prices, which are ridiculously high.

At least the controller is nice though.

Nothing! 100% never buying an Xbox One. I will probably pickup a ps4 when they get a bit cheaper though.

I think people get too hung up on resolution. I don't even think they understand the purpose of higher resolution and just think higher is better no matter what. 1080p is fine till your screen gets too large. A computer monitor running 2560x1440 shows no difference over one running 1080 most of the time (they typically are not the size of TVs). The larger the screen the more important it gets but what really matters is image quality. I suspect a lot of people mistake a better picture to be an effect of the resolution rather than realizing that the higher resolution screen is likely more recently made and thus likely using better technology that gives a better image quality.

The advantage of a monitor with that high resolution is most likely down to screen real-estate and productivity. As far as gaming goes... I'd think it's w/e. Putting these consoles down for not going that high is pointless. I can barely find pixels on a 1080p 37" LED TV and after a certain distance its not an easy thing to find pixels on a 720p screen even.

The real issue is image quality (colours, blacks, refresh etc), not necessarily resolution.

I think I'm going to have to disagree with that. When gaming, there's a big difference between 720p, 1080p and 1440p. Even at the size of mobile devices it makes a difference. At 720p you get jagged edges - and they're really noticeable. The smaller the monitor, the harder it is to tell, but you can, and most people with consoles play on tvs rather than specialist 'gaming monitors'.

They've already ruled my country out as a market by not launching until 2014, so as far as I'm concerned: Nothing.

Without wishing to be disrespectful, you didn't really think that one through did you? You're implying that 1440p is a "must have", yet you're also saying - correctly - that most console owners use a normal TV as a display. My problem with that is, (based on a quick scan of the Currys/PC World site), that you'd really have to have one of these brand new "4K" TV's to get to 1440p - and that's a minimum spend of £3000! So disregarding 4K TV's, conventional ones are merely 1080p in which case surely that resolution is what you want to aim for - which is what Sony at least is claiming they can do.

And no, I'm not a PS3/4 fan boy.
