Yeah I could understand slightly removing headphones but reading a Kindle etc isn't really going to distract you. Even so with headphones in I think people would notice the gas masks drop, the jolting plane and the panic around them...

By the distraction/delay logic staff should also have to make sure nobody was asleep and all deaf/blind/old/fat people were well out of the way so they didn't cause an obstruction.

I was asked to turn it off last Sunday on an Eastern Airways flight down to Cardiff. Although on the way back up on Friday I wasn't asked at all.

There is no way to police it, any device left in a bag could be on and transmitting - I suppose the airlines have finally admitted the futility of the policy and just decided to save their staff a frustrating exercise.
And telling people off doesn't always work - I was on a flight into heathrow, and the stewardesses tried to get several blokes to turn their phones off during final descent. It didnt work - language barrier & the fact that they were slightly inebriated!

Dont know if this was the case for other people, but I found there was also no consistency by staff. On another flight into heathrow, I was told I couldnt use my camera whilst we were over London ... on the flight out (whilst taxi-ing) the steward had seen me, but said nothing.

I never thought that phones had much effect on airplanes anyway.. I have always recorded with a GoPro out of a window for the entire flight and just make sure the crew doesn't see it. like most people have said I really really really hope they don't ever allow phone calls, a young child or someone who talks too loud is bad enough.

Because switching off a phone for 15 minutes is so much of a hassle.

Sarcasm aside, I'm actually glad that airlines are relaxing about devices, at last.
