You are, in fact, wrong, but it is a perfectly understandable mistake to make. In reality, what passes for conservative thinking is based on 2 axioms:
- There are some people who are better than others, and there are some people who are worse than others. People who are better deserve special privileges, to be able to do what they want to do, and people who are worse deserve punishment, to have their lives made inconvenient or difficult in various ways. Thus, some people can get away with financial fraud on a massive scale, while others have to be badgered with things like Internet filters.
- Conservatives know what is right and what is wrong based on how they feel about it. This has several consequences, the main ones being:
- This allows them to know who is better and who is worse (see point 1 above).
- They can tell if an argument is a good argument not by analyzing its premises and logical consistency, but by seeing if the argument appears to support the conclusion they already feel is true. That's why there is rarely any consistency in their thinking, e.g. calling rich criminals "job creators" but never worrying about creating jobs, or claiming that filtering the Internet will protect children but never worrying about actually protecting children.
Be aware, though, that so called "Conservatives" are not the only ones that think along these lines; radical feminists do so too, as did Soviet Communists, and a great many others throughout history.
