Re: News - UK porn filters bypassed by a simple Chrome extension

I wonder when violence and swearing will be filtered out too because thats probably what kids are going to look up if porns not an option. I really dont understand why this is an "opt out" system the internet should be unrestricted and open to everyone unless they choose otherwise.
If a parent is too ignorant or stupid to use these features or keep an eye on their kids then its their business and their own problem, why filter the entire countries internet!

It is, but none of the traditional parties have remained true to their idealistic goals. Instead, they chase votes. So an overly simplistic way of looking at it would be: people thinking about voting conservative are quite likely to also be the kind of people who read the daily mail. So a conservative govt wanting to retain or grow it's voting pool might like to align it's policies with the kinds of things the daily mail campaigns about.

Staunch tory voters who are 'above' the daily mail aren't likely to vote for an alternative until a more conservative option presents itself, which UKIP threatened to do at one point, hence a couple of recent policies thrown in to fight that off as well.

Labour have been caught in a tricky place, and in some way a backlash against tory nanny policies leaves them with no way to counter, so the only threat comes from the lib dems who can proudly wear 'liberal' on their sleeves. Only they've just spent the last few years as the torys whipping boys and will do well to avoid being set up for a fall come the next election.

His political opponent would say Cameron is attempting to cover up the real problem, or is being badly advised.
Such as CEOP having its budget cut by %10, or claiming there has been a 50% increase in CEOP staffing levels when people with intimate knowledge of CEOP dispute those figures, and that only 192 were arrested last year despite CEOP having detailed records on over 50,000 predators.

Cameron has to be seen to be doing something, as when April Jones and Tia Sharp's parents demand a crackdown on internet child abuse he cant tell them that we have had cleanfeed since 2003 and that already blocks access to illegal Web sites, a system that has seen constant mission creep from its original purpose of blocking child abuse related material to now also being used to block copyright infringement sites. A system that i may add is now all but useless with the popularity of proxy's and such bound to be on the rise from now on.

The point I was trying to make was that whatever the government tries to impose on the internet an internet nerd somewhere will undo it.

You are, in fact, wrong, but it is a perfectly understandable mistake to make. In reality, what passes for conservative thinking is based on 2 axioms:

    1. There are some people who are better than others, and there are some people who are worse than others. People who are better deserve special privileges, to be able to do what they want to do, and people who are worse deserve punishment, to have their lives made inconvenient or difficult in various ways. Thus, some people can get away with financial fraud on a massive scale, while others have to be badgered with things like Internet filters.
    2. Conservatives know what is right and what is wrong based on how they feel about it. This has several consequences, the main ones being:
      1. This allows them to know who is better and who is worse (see point 1 above).
      2. They can tell if an argument is a good argument not by analyzing its premises and logical consistency, but by seeing if the argument appears to support the conclusion they already feel is true. That's why there is rarely any consistency in their thinking, e.g. calling rich criminals "job creators" but never worrying about creating jobs, or claiming that filtering the Internet will protect children but never worrying about actually protecting children.

Be aware, though, that so called "Conservatives" are not the only ones that think along these lines; radical feminists do so too, as did Soviet Communists, and a great many others throughout history.

Re: News - UK porn filters bypassed by a simple Chrome extension

The difficult part is this. My missus knows the filter is now in place, so if porn sites start suddenly re-appearing then she'll know I have either bypassed the filter or opted out. Either is a lose lose scenario for me.

Damn decision donkeys, they are probaly still spanking the monkey based on black & white victorian photographs so don't see the real damage this is doing to regular [male] folk with un-adventurous partners :/ .

Of course it's easily bypassed, we all knew this would be the case. The gov't have got what they wanted, however, as traffic is still routed through each company's analysis system regardless of whether you have it enabled, bypassed or disabled.

Re: News - UK porn filters bypassed by a simple Chrome extension

That's only the half of it, as well as all traffic being routed through servers that will check and possibly log everything regardless of the filter being enabled, disabled or bypassed. David Cameron has also tasked GCHQ with cracking the dark web, a laudable idea until you realise its impossible to distinguish normal internet traffic such as encrypted online purchases or bank transfers from the encrypted traffic that makes up the dark web.

Basically he has given GCHQ the green light to monitor all internet traffic under the guise of protecting the children, yet due to budget cuts CEOP doesn't have the resources to actual prosecute all the sicko's they have records on.

Just get a decent router with two networks. One with OpenDNS filtering on and the other without.

Of course the filters don't work. If they did then there would be no reason to push for a more comprehensive solution... such as the inevitable white list internet. [/conspiracy hat]

Incognito (or InPrivate) mode is your friend! That, or setup separate accounts for each person in your household, and keep your password to yourself. That's what I would do, though I suppose that for some this will be easier said than done.

Do they even chase votes anymore? Voter turnout has had a general decline since the war with the largest drop over the last 2 decades. The only thing that can be safely said about the modern politician is that they're corrupt sellouts. To whom they've sold out to is the only thing in question. It seems that the feminist lobby has been at the forerunner of this porn crap, with the copyright lobby rubbing their hands together for the piracy angle. Probably with Mil. Int. and GCHQ whispering into their ears as well.

In any case, it's certainly not the public interest they're concerned with here.
