With mod support and offline mode, this may be worth a punt if it drops below £15.

One of my worst purchases in recent years.
Nothing to do with technical issues, bugs, DRM or map sizes.....all to do with game longevity.

I agree with you here, but this is EA/Origin we're talking about, not known for reducing their prices, currently the base game is still £30 and the base game + cities of tomorrow is £45, the other bits of DLC are between £4-8 and that's just for a couple of new buildings.
In some ways I don't think the city size limit is as bad as some people think, it changes the nature of the game, you cannot play it like simcity4 where you can have a giant plot with everything in it, you have to specialise your city, then you use multiple cities in a region to share their effects (and high populations is one of those things)
Similar situation exists with road building and planning, the new road system is far more organic than the old tile grid system but that makes it far harder to fully understand how the system works and how you have to use it to get the most out of it.
The old grid system wasn't organic but easy to get very efficient layouts with.
Tip for you, watch Zhatt's advanced road laying tips http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cR7wJDAWD9s
Another issue connected to both roads and the city plot size is commuting, the moment you have a 2nd city in your region you'll get sims trying to commute in and out of your city, for work, shopping, education and tourism this can create massive bottle necks on the freeway outside your city as sims try to get in and out of your city, if plots sizes increased you'd increase this issue and could really end up breaking not only your city but a region.

too late, damage has been done, this game has ruined the sim city franchise for me and told me to never trust maxis.
add on top of that, why do EA persist to destroy modding communities?
back to older simcitys
To sell DLC, who wants to pay £4-8 for a couple of buildings when you could just download a mod to do it?
The good news is that EA have decided that they've milked it as much as they can and modding is also going to be opened too, I'm sure some people are just waiting to start on a city plot expansion mod as soon as they can.
