It's like what's app that needs a phone number.... (duo that is)
I'm guessing Allo will be more like FB Messenger

Old puter - still good enuff till I save some pennies!
Girls, don't get caught up arguing about iMessage. It's a closed system, open only to one minority platform, enough said.
WhatsApp have published on their blog the moment about the rule change, if you read the agreement you can untick the share with facebook thing.
I'm really disappointed, I was vocal at the time of facebook buying them out, that the model would change and once again facebook has fornicated up the simplest of things. Sadly most users won't care or understand.
So who is now using Viber?
throw new ArgumentException (String, String, Exception)
Only used what's up because it was payed app with no ads... Now back to vibe?!
Hmm, my WhatsApp has stopped working because they won't allow me to use my "outdated" version (it's only a couple of months old), and, as I recall, the new version is asking me for lots of permission that I am not keen on giving. This is an incentive for me to uninstall it.
To be honest, I never really liked WhatsApp from the get go. I reluctantly installed it because a group of people I had to keep in touch with uses it, but it never grew into me. And it's not like I have anything against those kind of apps. But compared to LINE, a very similar application used in Japan and some other parts of Asia, it just doesn't seem as good. One of the thing I really didn't like is how it default my displaying your phone number. Not only does it make it hard to know who's who, I also am not keen on having my phone number available to -everyone- I am willing to text message.
Also, I've never heard of Hangouts. I've also never had friends who ever asked me to install it. Truth is, those kind of apps are very regional. Most people here probably haven't heard of LINE. And I know some of my friends from Hong Kong use another application which looks like a carbon copy of LINE.. but isn't LINE. They all aim to facilitate communication between people and groups of people, and if you do not have a group of friends/acquaintance using it, then chances are you aren't going to bother with it. I don't expect my friends in the UK to install LINE for my sake, any more than I'd expect my friends in Japan to start SMS (which exist but never really picked up over there, even in the days of dumb-phone because their dumb-phones were capable of email for a long time and that is what they prefer). And on the same token, I'd be quite reluctant to install one more app to be connected with one person. I don't want half a dozen ways of messaging, let alone two dozens.
I've deleted my account, and removed the app from my phone.
Have been considering GroupMe as an alternative, as that'll allow a similar level of group messaging as frankly, most people get silly amounts to unlimited SMS messages on their contracts, it'll do what I needed WhatsApp to do, which was send messages to multiple people.

This is bunny and friends. He is fed up waiting for everyone to help him out, and decided to help himself instead!
I would happily pay £3.65 per year for Whatsapp to be free of ads.
I'm still on GTalk with my friends and colleagues. Well, actually, I'm using Trillian while others use Pidgin. And yes, I know that GTalk uses the XMPP/Jabber protocol.
As for WhatsApp ...who really didn't see that coming?
Is there something I'm missing or are people blowing this out of proportion? I ticked the 'do not share data with Facebook' option when it prompted me to share it..

Regardless of a tick box to not share data with Facebook, this is the start of the slippery slope, which i wish i could escape. There will always be 'don't care' friends/family who will refuse to move, so i'm stuck with it.
No one has mentioned Telegram messaging application, that is available for both Android, iOS AND Windows Phones! It has been providing optional encrypted messaging before WhatApp implemented it. Also I like the fact the name of the App has some relevance to the type of application it is... telegram... ie messaging.

One thing I really do not like, is when social network applications (be it FB, or whatever messaging application wants to access the contact list). Even if I was okay with it (and I am not), my contacts may not be okay with it, and vice-versa.

Looks like the Information Commissioner is "looking" into the WhatsApp and Facebook data sharing plan, fat lot of use that will be though.
