Re: QOTW: Which graphics card would you buy on a £140 budget?

Past experience of Nvidia cards (admittedly some time since i had one but what i have had were always a bit flakey) means i would probably choose something AMD, preferably Sapphire whose cards i have had have always been exemplary.
Not being that anal about pouring over graphics cards and going by what has been posted already i would probably choose a Sapphire RX460 which seems to be under the budget. What slightly puts me off is that any reviews i have read seem to indicate they are noiser and run hotter than comparative Nvidia cards.
Anyone seen any passive cooled latest generation cards yet?

I would be tempted by the cheapest 460 with 4GB of RAM. At the moment that is:

    http://skinflint.co.uk/gigabyte-rade...7.html?hloc=uk

    for under £110.

Re: QOTW: Which graphics card would you buy on a £140 budget?

I have no idea what card I'd buy for £140, but I'd need quite a lot of convincing as to why I'd want to spend that much. The likes of Steam having thoroughly ruined gaming for me, I don't remember the last time I bought a new graphically-demanding game, and absent the gaming imperative or a few specialist uses (which I rarely do these days) just about any card will do what I need.

None of them, they're all poor value for money.

    For £140 I'd buy a second hand Nvidia 970 or 980.

    A10 7890K

I am unlikely to get a standalone GPU in that range atm, but have been known to spend nearly that on APUs before. Some cards seem to hit a sweet spot, and I think the 1050 is too expensive for that.

Re: QOTW: Which graphics card would you buy on a £140 budget?

Honestly, none. At that range the IGP built into every consumer CPU is starting to handle 3D tasks GPUs around that price point somewhat competently. If I'm going to splash out on a GPU, I'm going to make sure it handles AAA games at 1440p at reasonably quality and frame rates.

Not sure what IGPs you are looking at. These outperform even the best AMD APUs by a huge stretch. The best APU has the equivalent of around a R7 240/250. The RX 460 is around 250% more powerful than that.

I think £100 or less then maybe its worth considering a powerful APU. £100+ and a dGPU is worth it.

I would save for an R470. Not worth going lower for any kind of longevity. Also, I bet freesync is great.

Re: QOTW: Which graphics card would you buy on a £140 budget?

I'm currently not using a classic desktop, so most cards aren't relevant to me.

If a Thunderbolt eGPU is released for this price (which probably won't happen any time soon), I'd be interested in that.

My HTPC needs half height cards, and my choice for an upgrade would be to forgo a separate card and go for Bristol Ridge. Unfortunately AMD doesn't seem to want me to buy one. That might fall within this budget when it finally comes out.

Re: QOTW: Which graphics card would you buy on a £140 budget?

I love AMD, but I'd have to go with the GTX 1050 Ti over the RX460 as in this budget the 1050 Ti clearly won the game, add a few more pounds and I'd definitely go for the RX470.

GoG is worth a look - they have games which don't need Steam. Companies like CDPR do special versions of games like The Witcher 3 which don't require Steam for example:

Re: QOTW: Which graphics card would you buy on a £140 budget?

I bought a 4890 for £127 in 2009, so to be spending a bit more on something which is nowhere near top of the range, seems a bit steep. I don't buy the modern games, so I don't need much more than what the 4890 gives me, but if it went one day, I would probably replace it with something from the previous range.
