Re: QOTW: Have you pre-ordered AMD Ryzen?

Not a chance. I find it to be madness that people are pre-ordering these while we still know very little about them. Most of the "information" available is speculation, rumour or based on benchmarks that may be fake or selected favourable screenshots released by AMD. If AMD want people to splash the cash then lift the damn NDA and let independant reviews be released.

Re: QOTW: Have you pre-ordered AMD Ryzen?

If I was in the market for a new PC and needed 8C/16T throughput for my workloads, I might have a sneaky pre-order in by now for a 1700 and a B350 matx motherboard. Depends on how desperate I was for the new build.

Why? Because we have at least enough information to know the chips are going to be faster, clock for clock, than the construction cores, and for general computing even my A10 4600m - with a lowly all-core clock of 2.3GHz - is more than adequate. So it's a reasonable assumption that for general computing Ryzen performance will also be more than adequate. At that point if you have workloads that scale with threads, it's a bit of a no brainer. 16T at that price? I'll bite your hand off.

As it is, I don't have any of those workloads, and I don't need a new computer in the forseeable future. So, no Ryzen pre-order for me. Maybe when the APUs come round in 2H, if my HTPC is starting to struggle, I'll look again. For now, it's not for me ... but I would totally understand if other people decided it was for them.

Re: QOTW: Have you pre-ordered AMD Ryzen?

I'm still not making full use of my current 4 core system so 8 cores will have to wait, also I can't justify the expense of moving to DDR4!

Surely if you were to buy a new intel processor you'd need a new motherboard too though; they've been changing sockets every other processor...

No, never have and never will pre-order an IT product. Waiting for benchmarks and any issues to be found by the early adopters.

I wouldnt trust the press ubtill a long time after release (also when prices fall) to buy now is madness, benchmarks and overclocks not on nitrogen might make it a quicker purchace but as and now .......... hell no !

Pre-order, seriously, I'll wait to see what they offer in the £150-£170 price range before I consider AMD for my next build. Used AMD for 3 out of the 4 of my last builds but Intel easily won me over for the latest.

Re: QOTW: Have you pre-ordered AMD Ryzen?

Yes I pre-ordered and went full bore with the 1800x and Gigabyte Gaming x370 K7. "Why the hell wou..." I can hear the screams from the net now , let me give my reasons.

First I just think it will be a great platform in and off itself, the price for what you get is first rate.

Second, I'm upgrading from a 2600k and a Z77 MSI mainboard so anything from the current gen is a leap forward and I already have 32GB of DDR4 and a Corsair 480GB Nvme SSD sat in a drawer.

Third, my current mainboard decided to fry itself last Friday so I have to use my wife's laptop ATM and I'm getting grief about that.

Fourth, The absolute highest frame rate in games is not the be all, nor end all for me, that's more a GPU factor anyway and my 980Ti will carry me to Vaga.

Any way these and a couple more trivial reason (Birthday soon etc...) made me think why not and put the smack down. Convinced I'm in for a treat.

Not yet, but I most likely will upgrade from my 2500K to a 1700X, I've wanted an 8 core for a while now.

Re: QOTW: Have you pre-ordered AMD Ryzen?

I literally had it all in my basket ready to click checkout. It was a 1700X, asus z370pro, 16GB of corsair dominator 2666mhz, 512 samsung 960 evo m.2 and a new case to wrap it in. 1Ks worth of bits. But I hesitated and I've decided to wait for validation that it's a "good buy". Because if it's not the wife will gut me and I'll never be seen ever again

And that would be a sad loss for HEXUS!

Seriously, I think that's a good plan - being an early adopter always carries some risk, the only benefits really are bragging rights and e-peen.

Prices tend to fall with time (but not guaranteed, and are subject to exchange rate fluctuations) but letting other rush in and get the arrows is usually worthwhile!

Same could be said for the Phenom when it came out.

I had my Phenom II for years, same with Piledriver. But some cracking bugs in those first versions.

In fact, I'm not gaming so much atm so I just don't need any more CPU power than I already have in my 8350. Perhaps in a few months when my birthday comes around I might have changed my tune, but for now I'm good.

I do wonder given AMD's track record, if Ryzen is as fast as it appears and has some of those first gen bugs in it, then the next gen should be a corker

Re: QOTW: Have you pre-ordered AMD Ryzen?

No way I'd preorder without seeing official benchmarks! That's lunacy!

I bought an i5 4670K a while back and a mATX case so I could take my gaming rig to work while I was away during the week. That's now more than 2 years ago, and I've since packed in the job and am using the 4C/4T i5 for creative work - I still have an old i7 920 nehalem machine which I sometimes use in parallel if I need to crunch through more work. Wish I'd bought the i7 back then when I was employed and had cash!
Now I've made this massive life change, I'm being very careful with my money so am looking with interest at Ryzen for my next machine for work and gaming. 16T would be absolutely brilliant for some of my work, and could really change how long certain tasks take dramatically. Of course, I'll need to start actually earning some cash from my exploits before putting any down on hardware, so there's a sticking point right there for the short-term!

But bring it on. Great to see that AMD might finally be back in the CPU game, and if they get this right with Ryzen, by the time I can afford to upgrade (or rather, by the time I can no longer afford not to upgrade...), things could be very sweet in the CPU space again, like back in the Athlon days
