It's a good fix for now, yes. However it's achieved

The age old 'first impressions count' thing which AMD do so badly with most of their releases.

The classic was of course Hawaii release. AFAIK, CB use the reference design unless otherwise stated, so this is ref 290 vs 780Ti:

(From CB's current GPU range list for April: https://www.computerbase.de/thema/gr...rte/rangliste/)
The far more expensive 780Ti probably sold better than the 290 and at the time the 290 was the 780 competition. And look at the 770 vs the 280X as well, or even where the 970 is in that list. While there are other factors for sale figures, those Nvidia cards sold way more than their AMD competitors while costing more and ageing worse.

Its why it is easy to get annoyed with AMD at times, but hopefully things should look a bit more rosy tomorrow.

Having said that I see a lot of forums recommending expensive motherboards even with R5 purchases, which for me seems a bit self defeating,ie, £150 to £170 motherboard with a £220 R5 seems rather excessive.

I would kind of expect a cheaper board would do,and less cores should hopefully mean you can get away with less than optimal RAM.
