Never join a kickstarter thing... first of all you would never get your cash back and furthermore you let one guy stay in control and letting him/her be able to do whichever to keep the trend going.. if it is a good product get with one of the good companies out there, NOT EA.
I put £30 in to SC a couple of years ago, I also put cash in to Elite Dangerous. I like just about everybody else was fully aware that this was not buying a product, it does not guarantee a game after a year, 2 years, even 3. What I did get was the possibility that a the game designers would be able to build a new game that none of the game studios would commit to. Elite shows that it can be done, hopefully SC will eventually be released, but it was worth risking £30 even if it isn't. Elite's release was far from smooth, with threats of a class action lawsuit in the US.
The reason these kickstarters took off, and raised so much money is that games studios have not been addressing this side of the market, and when they have the results have been lacking or misleading (No Mans Sky). I wouldn't be surprised if a new combat flight sim was the next big kickstarter game, things seem to have died since IL2, the publishers don't look interested.
