Re: Deepcool launches MF 120 'frameless' RGB fans

i'm gonna continue to defend this fan until I've had a play with it.

Intel, for YEARS have made their CPU cooler fans with a similar style frameless design. ie... three or more legs up to the fan motor.

    https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=in...w=1920&bih=915

there was a benefit about air flow moving outward as well as forward. So if these fans are used for a roof vent in a case, they might do the job well.

on fans that have the back clear the motor has to be supported in front of the air flow instead.

I'd normally be right with you on that reasoning... but even their own quoted specs are a pile of spit.

On a CPU cooler it's slightly different, the airflow moving outwards also helps cool components on the motherboard. With a case fan you want it to funnel as much hot air outside of the case (or directed cooler air into the case) as you can, and looking at the 56CFM, there are better and quieter fans available (including with RGB if that's your thing).

Re: Deepcool launches MF 120 'frameless' RGB fans

Are you all forgetting the artic cooling "frame less" fans?
    https://www.arctic.ac/uk_en/arctic-f12-pro-std.html

Granted they don't use thick aluminium (and I'm guessing some sort of plastic light diffusion strips) and they sure don't have those silly looking channels on the trailing blade edge
Aluminium for a fan frame is also nothing new, Evercool did aluminium fan frames a while back, they do have some advantages over plastic, to make a frame light weight you have to use thinner materials or softer less dense plastics in both situations you end up with more flexible frames which can cause issues if the blades are badly balanced.

Now a lot of this has been mitigated by better moulding of blades & hub so tolerances are far better even on cheaper fans and these definitely reek of form over function, it's just not a very appealing form.

They also don't have anything much to offer apart from less noise - 0.3 sone @1500rpm = about 22dB, making these fans just under 30dB at full tilt...

The intel stock coolers are not renowned as great performers (example). Air blown sideways is useful for cooling the VRMs, but with a solid motherboard underneath any air blown straight down will end up going sideways (after it gets a chance to cool the CPU, which tends to be a higher priority). Putting the fan outside the case and having it suck would mean that the sideways air is useful, but if you're doing that it'd probably be simpler to just use a centrifugal fan

Re: Deepcool launches MF 120 'frameless' RGB fans

I think a frame designed around the intended flow of the air will always be better than no frame.

A traditional frame closes the space from the outside of case to the intake of the fan, this, as far as I can see, has nothing to stop it also circulating internal air as well as pulling air from outside.
Perhaps as a concept this may offer some benefit but...
    Naaaaa... No thanks... No dice...

Re: Deepcool launches MF 120 'frameless' RGB fans

i`m waiting for dyson to introduce their `bladeless` fans as pc parts:

    https://www.dyson.co.uk/fans-and-heaters.html

see, the floor-standing one is only stuck on the end of a tube.
you could have one central motor unit an connect the `fan` bits to it with tubing- to match your custom watercooling loop of course.
    hmm.. *thinks*
    d`you kno what..

That is honestly one of the most ugly fans I've ever seen.
