QOTW: Do you own a smart speaker?

We almost all have smartphone, now smart speakers then God knows what...we are all going to finish dumb :-)

PS: It would be actually good if it wasn't connected to the internet and was just in the local network. I know , it needs big db to pull out its answers, but the fact that micro is always on and goes outside the house and gets recorded (for future improvements, right?), just doesn't feel right. I love my boring privacy just little bit more.So, nah to smart speakers/micros

Yup, a Google Home Mini mainly used for Spotify, kitchen timer, and weather report checking. More useful than I thought it'd be, TBH, and got while they were reduced to £35.

Actually I have a raspberry Pi in a cardboard box from the magazine project about a year ago. There is a big button on top that glows, it doesn't listen unless you press the button and then it uses Google's web services to access their assistant under my account. About the only time it gets used is when I am tying my shoelaces to go to work I press the button and say "Tell me a joke". Not sure why, the jokes aren't generally that funny but it has become a sort of ritual

Got an Apple homepod to see what all the fuss was about as there was a big writeup about it on the audiophile forum on reddit. First thing I did was disable Siri, I'm more interested in a small but decent sounding speaker for the kitchen. Happy with it so far, might consider another one for stereo mode when airplay 2.0 comes out.

Have an Echo plus that controls the lights ,my Surround-sound/Hi-fi, and the Honeywell heating controls. Works really well.

Nope. Not that I have any prejudice against those kind of things per se, but I have no permanent home right now so I need to cut the clutters/gadgets as much as I can. As such I haven't even looked into whether I would even have a use for those things if I didn't have to move as much as I do.

I don't have a smart speaker but I do have an old Nexus tablet with google home on it which we kinda use instead, we also have one smart socket/plug which we use as a timer for our old oil boiler which we control with an app on the tablet which saves us going out to the boiler house several times a day.

Nope. Failing to see the point when I can motivate my arse to do it myself, maybe they have uses (like for disabled people etc). I don't even use Siri on my iPhone, to me it's very much a novelty and not something that is required or mainstream.

I bought a Raspberry Pi Google AIY Voice Kit, after watching Christopher Barnatts video on ExplainingComputers. And i bought it only to play arround with.

It's not something i would want in my house being on all the time. Although i own a Smartphone, which technically is the same damn thing just smaller speaker, and i keep that on all the time.

What something thats listening to me all the time? Err thanks but no thanks. Will it sound as good as my existing separates system? No not even close, I like my music so I paid money so I can listen to it in all of its glorious detail, In my home and in my van. I don't care how good the reviews are of a tinny single speaker are they just aren't going to cut it in my world.

Not in my house.
I have a pair of Bluetooth speakers that we use for music. Cheap as chips (ho ho) and decent sound. But then I'm far from an audiophile

I got a HEOS 1 free with my amplifier. Its a great speaker for music around the house wirelessly.

Got a free Echo. Alexa is rubbish. ignores me and listens to the wife. Typical.
