Ive only comparitively recently retired my old Intellimouse, used it daily from Dec 2001 to 2016.
Now using a Logitech MX Master which is sublime.
There isn't benefits per say as it's horses for courses, all optical mice work the same it's just how the surface being tracked is illuminated, ones supposedly more suited to fiber the other to hard surfaces (iirc optical works better on cloth and laser on hard) using a mouse not suited to the corresponding surface can result in jitter, poor tracking, and difficulty in tracking low speed movement, although your average user probably wouldn't notice.
I've always thought that Microsoft using the name IntelliMouse is like Intel naming their CPUs MicrosoftiProcessor.
The original, at the time, was excellent. We have moved on though.
Was always my favourite mouse, the Razer DeathAdder has been the closest thing I've found I liked.
