However memory is an interesting point for the next consoles - they will obviously have a faster GPU than existing consoles, but where does that leave memory? Do you reckon they'll stick with using GDDR to allow for greater bandwidth for the GPU? DDR5 approaches GDDR5 in terms of bandwidth, but GDDR6 pulls away further. HBM is a thing too, but I wonder what cost would be like for that?
ISTR some funky motherboard for Intel CPUs that had DDR2 and DDR3 ram sockets on it, and warnings not to populate both at the same time.

GDDR ram is interesting, the big trick is lots of narrow channels to allow more concurrent memory accesses as needed by the vast number of threads in a GPU. With Zen2 having a large cache and quite a few threads, it might be a better match to CPU use than it used to be.

I had one of those! https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard...DS3R-rev-1x#ov

Never used DDR3 in it though, it was way more expensive that DDR2 at the time IIRC, and didn't make a worthwhile upgrade in terms of performance.

This is a nice gesture from AMD, but it seems like a lot of trouble to go through just to save a bit of money? Having to wait for the helper CPU to arrive, going to the trouble of putting it in and taking it out, and then having to send it back - just to end up with an older and less future-proof motherboard. It seems to me like it's smarter to just get an X570 motherboard if you want Ryzen 3000. It's more future-proof with PCIe 4, higher capacity BIOS chips, etc. and properly supports the CPU out of the box. Furthermore, all the X570 motherboards appear to support BIOS flashback, so you wouldn't have this problem in the future when upgrading the CPU!
