    Case
    PSU
    Mobo
    CPU
    Cooler
    2 x RAM
    GPU
    2 x SSD
    HDD
    Optical
    3 x fans

14 in total. Probably only a couple of components fewer than years back (add in a sound card and maybe a network card) but modern PCs certainly feel a lot simpler. Maybe it's the cabling as much as anything; modular PSUs and thin SATA cables instead of spaghetti wired PSUs and chunky IDE cables.

Re: QOTW: How many individual components are in your PC?

No difference on the overview scale for the PC itself - extra fans from changing from a Nofan CR95 to a Dark Rock Pro. But there's been wholescale rearrangement and rationalisation of cables outside because I got fed up with the noise of the GPU and put my PC in a cupboard. So I have one USB 3 cable coming from the PC to a hub and one USB 2 cable to another hub plus three fibre DP 1.4 cables plus one TOSlink cable. There's a third USB cable going to the UPS but that's also in the cupboard. So where before I had used ever so many USB ports on the PC, now I don't.

Re: QOTW: How many individual components are in your PC?

My 5 yr old main rig has all the basic required stuff, plus GPU, SSD, HDD, Blu-ray Drive and DVDR/W Drive. Also a combo thing in an external 3.5 slot which provides SD card ports, bluetooth etc.
It's still a very powerful i7 4770k with a 1080 GPU in it, so it will last a long time yet.
I still find the optical drives useful when family members ask me to copy them off photos and wedding videos etc, to send to people!
As it's now near impossible to buy a decent looking case with optical drive slots, I shall hold onto it as long as I can.

I built another machine recently, which was just motherboard, CPU, RAM, AIO Cooler, GPU and NVME SSD onboard, plus some light strips. That was it.

Re: QOTW: How many individual components are in your PC?

Individual components - definitely what's bought as a single item. My first exposure to a computer was a single component, the computer. It came with a monitor and keyboard etc etc.

What individual things have I bought for this computer?

    - Case
    - Motherboard
    - CPU
    - CPU cooler
    - RAM
    - ODD
    - Hard disks x2
    - Sound card
    - Graphics card
    - PSU

But it's a PC, that's just for starters, let's ignore the peripherals.

    - Swap the sound card
    - Another GPU
    - Some different fans
    - Yet more fans
    - A SSD
    - More SSDs
    - Moar SSDs!!
    - 10GBe nic
    - More RAM
    - A different 10gbe nic
    - Another GPU
