Nothing, IDK how it works across the pond but some (most?) UK retailers simply treat it as some sort of marketing campaign instead of genuinely discounting things to get their books in the black, 20% off on black Friday is not a one off event or special if you've offered that or even bigger discounts in the past.

Nothing! Past experience says I can't really buy anything on Black Friday, someone will buy it first. Past experience also says that the deal will most certainly repeat on the Cyber week or in January when it's actually possible to buy.

Absolutely bugger all, but that's because I use price-tracking sites to see whether someone's actually a good deal, rather than buying on impulse. Nothing that I'm after has been on sale.

Most things I find in Black Friday sales are bad deals, it's just a day for people to binge on things before Christmas I suppose.

I did get a Fractal Design R6 case from Scan but I still could have gotten one cheaper if I held out a bit longer.

Re: QOTW: What did you buy on Black Friday 2019?

Xbox One X, purely because my Day One edition has been problematic and needed reset a few times lately -£300 with Star Wars so not too shabby

of course then I see the Digital S for £82 and thinking that would go nicely in the Tenerife house, but i'm passing on that atm, cant really justify it atm.

I am on the lookout for parts to build my godson his first PC (8 years old) and was hoping for some nice discounts, maybe cyber monday will have a few more deals.

Black Friday does not make sense in this country, with the exception of the multinationals like Amazon who dont pay much attention to fiscal years as they dont appear to pay tax anyways.

Black Friday works in the US as the fiscal year is Jan to Dec, meaning that shops move into the Black around november and any existing sales at that time are then profitable, allowing them to sell off existing stock at lower prices.

In the UK we work on an April to March basis, because reasons i suppose, i mean i'm sure theres a very good reason for it, bit like the football season being Sep-May, and the school system being Aug to Jun, (or Sep to July in sassenach country). Anyway, its the way we do it, and because we do it that way, that means its the right way to do it, right?

As I was saying, what we used to have before Black Friday jumped all over it, was the January Sales, which, like Black Friday, was when the majority of UK retailers went into the black and therefore could pass on massive savings on existing stock to us, the humble consumer.

Of course this was all in the days of queueing up outside marks and spencers on the 2nd of January, nursing a hangover from new year (well, at least up here, i know our southern neighbours actually opened shops at midnight on 31st Dec to usher in the sales, this is sacrilege as the only thing that should be opened at the bells is a fresh bottle) and glaring at the wee wifie who you knew was making a beeline for the dressing gown you had your eye on.

So, ignoring all that waffle, black friday deals in the UK generally are not that impressive as they are mainly loss leaders as the stores in question are still trading at a loss for another month or so.

I don't think it works all that well for impulse purchases but, if you're playing the longer game and are willing to put in a bit of effort, you can score some bargains. if you have an idea of what you're looking for in the weeks/months prior you can keep an eye the price changes on models you're interested in and make an informed choice.

However, as with a lot of the 20% off ebay campaigns, most retailers hike the prices. I'm looking at you, Ebuyer.

Re: QOTW: What did you buy on Black Friday 2019?

"Black Friday" was incidental to me. I think the big bag of silica gel I got to absorb some of the moisture in my car had some money off because of it, and well done to the workers at Amazon who got it here so quickly.

"Black Friday" had no influence on the price of the replacement blower motor I need to demist the windscreen in the aforementioned vehicle quickly and reliably without opening the side windows at 1 °C and 70 mph; you might think such an expensive part would be repairable, but nooooo, just replacing the unreachable-without-destruction (just 3 screws would have made the difference) failed bearings would have been cheap (£5) and prevented the motor from burning out (£120) just when I needed it most.

(On the off-chance anyone is concerned, the replacement is scheduled to arrive on Tuesday evening, so, provided the polar bears stay away, I will fit it when sunlight appears the next day. Life is harsh in winter Essex.)

Re: QOTW: What did you buy on Black Friday 2019?

I think the only thing I bought on Friday was the 1 year warranty extension for this awesome Alienware 15 R4 I'm typing on, that I won from Hexus & Killer Networking last year.

The warranty was 15% off for renewing online, BTW, and I think that's a standard Dell Advantage deal, not limited to Black Friday. I had 6 days left on the warranty at the time.

Also, I've been waiting for Hexus to have a store with some logo stickers to plaster stuff. But now I think I might buy a sticker set for the laptop from dbrand (sale until December 2nd), if I can decide on colors/textures soon. Suggestions welcome

Re: QOTW: What did you buy on Black Friday 2019?

16GB more DDR4 (32GB for main PC now) and HP EX920 M2 and a few other parts for HTPC upgrades. Minor crap. Still waiting on a great 7nm card (cmon NV, get something out here so AMD will release better 7nm stuff) to replace my 1070ti. Likely not done buying, sales are still going...LOL. Oh and 2 256GB flash drives (never enough of these around here), the FAST ones Likely another SSD or two.
