Re: QOTW: Has the coronavirus affected your daily life?

So, I've been affected by Coronavirus quite a bit more since my first comment in here. I've just spent the last 3 days in bed and still feel like death warmed up, just on the computer instead.

I went to bed at 10pm on Tuesday and woke up at 1:30am on Wednesday violently shivering, with a horrible fever and a sore throat. I had gone to bed with no symptoms at all, I felt completely fine, but woke up with the worst fever I've ever experienced.
Then throughout the night and most of Wednesday my symptoms worsened a lot, ended up with the aches and pains, the tight chest and breathlessness, really sore eyes, bad headache at the front of my head.
At this point I rang the NHS number and they said because I didn't have the cough and hadn't travelled from an at-risk area, they weren't testing me.

The next the day the cough arrived, so I was 90% certain I had the coronavirus at this point. I have contacted my doctor since to get a sick line for SSP, but they've advised that because I'm otherwise fit and healthy, I won't be tested. I wish they would so I could know for definite though.

Currently in self-isolation, avoiding my girlfriend in the house. Lying in bed 24/7 occasionally getting up to shower, get water/tablets and generally just existing.

Today is the first day I've felt somewhat human since Wednesday morning.

This is, without a shadow of a doubt, the worst illness I've ever experienced, to the point that I can absolutely understand how it's killing people with health issues/the elderly.

Wonder how many there are like you that aren't being tested, still, keep the real numbers down eh...

sadly the real reason SFAIK is more along the lines of "limited resources - including test kits and lab time - therefore prioritise high-risk cases so they can target the health services responses and resources as best as possible." The point is most, if not all, of us will now, at some point get the virus. So trying to ID cases as the spike grows is pointless and they have, tacitly at least, admitted that they would not be able to keep up to do so. It's moved into the next phase where the assumption is people probably do have it, but if they're fit and healthy and self-isolating that will suffice for them.

Public Health England would love to know the actual stats, and believe me if they could everyone would be tested to get a real measure of this. They cry out for hard data like that. It's not a political feint, rather a pragmatic prioritisation of resources (physical and personel).

    The supermarket near me has been hit by panic buyers; pain killers cleared out and yes, toilet paper all gone too. Which brings me to this article on Time: https://time.com/5803273/hoarding-toilet-paper/, wherein this paragraph can be found;

When it comes to stocking up, different basics offer differing options. “If people did not find the food that they wanted, they could buy other food,” says Fischhoff. “For toilet paper, there are no substitutes.”
I don't know; have these people heard of washing their ass?

Government estimates were 95% of cases going untested... It does keep the numbers down, but it also gives a false idea of the mortality rate, which has a lot of people panicking.

As someone who works in the NHS, I have to agree that it comes down to resources. As there is no cure at this stage, there is not much point in knowing who has the virus other than knowing who needs to be monitored or hospitalised, which is achieved through the severity of their symptoms anyway.

Re: QOTW: Has the coronavirus affected your daily life?

Went to Tesco in Ballymoney (Co Antrim) on saturday - fairly chaotic but good stocks of most items, EXCEPT toilet rolls, hand soaps and sanitisers, pasta and uncooked rice (noticed that the microwave rice (we all love) is now selling at a higher price than usual), cans of soup and the like, Ibuprofen (and similar painkillers). Another side-effect is that people have become very selfish and rude. We did a fairly standard shop for a family of 5 - coming in at £260 - this includes beer, wine and a bottle of Jim Beam - but as I pushed the trolley out (fully loaded without any panic items) - a guy nudges his wife and nods towards me - "Look at that guy's trolley" - but it was normal (fully loaded every week).
At work - nobody has called in today (run a small printing company). The kids are all at school - although some Catholic schools are closing - as a Bishop told them to.
My daughter has a school ski trip in the USA in April - looks like that will be cancelled - wonder will we get the money back?
Wise old man won't you help me please? My house is a squash and a squeeze.

The microwave rice in my local shop is selling at the same price.

At my daughters school they had a Ski trip planned for a couple of months time, trip cancelled, they all got a full refund.

Good to know - I assume we will also get a refund, but you never know - with all these refunds, some, if not most of the travel companies are going to suffer.

The school was fully insured so I am not sure if its the insurance that produced the refunds or the travel company.

Vaccines normally take quite a bit of time to trial though, normally years.

I'm working in paediatrics at the moment as a doctor.

Re: QOTW: Has the coronavirus affected your daily life?

The UK media has ignored some great work done by a UK company:

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...ger-for-africa
    https://www.channel4.com/news/rapid-...for-uk-release

It costs $1 for the test, and it can be done in 10 minutes. The rollout is happening in the next few weeks. UK rollout apparently is happening in the next few weeks.
