ATi's HyperMemory performance not up to scratch?

At the beginning of the month, ATi launched their X300 with HyperMemory. HyperMemory is essentially ATi's answer to TurboCache, using system memory for graphics processing thanks to the PCIe interface.

However, early reports suggest that the X300 with HyperMemory isn't fast enough to take on NVIDIA's GeForce 6200 TurboCache. A 32MB X300HM is trumped by a 32MB 6200TC in most benchmarks. In fact, even the 128MB X300HM doesn't seem to be able to keep up with its 32MB 6200TC counterpart.

Find a set of benchmark results over at HKEPC hardware.

As far as I am aware, the HyperMemory products will arrive with Rys inside the next 5 days (I added in Sat & Sun to make my prediction more accurate - unheard of from a PR & Marketing person )

The price we have quoted to the press for our intro-solution was $59

The figures I have seen show that you can get similar performance on both HyperMemory and TurboCache if you are prepared to spend hundreds of dollars more on system memory etc for the TC solution...

...but if you match the systems the way that they will ship in the marketplace (i.e. 3GHz CPU and 256MB or 512MB memory) - then we will win on performance

Some of the biggest sites in the world have tested TurboCache on 'entry level systems' with 4000+ CPUs and 2GB of ultra fast system RAM which - IMHO - is nuts and gives the prospective customer no idea on the level of performance they will actualy be buying... not very useful buying advice

.... the only concern I have over testing is this:

Just an example - can't find the usual 'Sunday Papers' Systems online

Surely these system builders like big numbers and a card like this helps keep costs down - so instead of a MX400 or an X300 they put one of these in - big numbers, ATI or NVIDIA card and they get the brand in there? Tell me if I am wrong? I am not saying thats what spec system they should be used on - but this is the specification most will be sold in.

The above link is not the most extreme though
