We took a look at ATI's Radeon Xpress 200 when it was
first launched and since then we have seen what board partners
can do with the chipset. In a nutshell, Radeon Xpress 200 is a formidable chipset.
Today sees ATI's announcment of the Radeon Xpress200
M chipset, a mobile chipset for AMD systems. So, what will it bring mobile AMD users? Well, there's PCI-Express support for starters, along with support for Athlon, Sempron and the upcoming mobile Turion 64 processor. Add to that an onboard DirectX 9 PCIe graphics solution and there's promise of a very appealing mobile chipset.
With the introduction of RADEON XPRESS 200M, ATI delivers onboard RADEON X300 class visual performance and features. This visual performance is complimented by POWERPLAY 5.0, an innovation in power management for PCI Express. Through new capabilities such as Dynamic Lane Count Switching (DLCS), power is adjusted on the fly to reduce GPU power consumption by up to 30 per cent.
Turion looks set to be AMD's equivalent of the Pentium-M processor, so is Radeon XPress 200M the equivalent of Centrino? Intel have a solid setup in their latest incarnation of Centrino, 'Sonoma,' which we looked at recently. The 200M chipset could be just what is needed for the AMD mobile platform to keep in line with Intel, perhaps even surpass it.
We look forward to getting some Xpress 200M based samples onto the testbed here at HEXUS so we can see for ourselves what this new chipset has to offer.
