I guess it's about time I upgraded from my Sega Saturn...

    (that wasn't even a joke!)

I look at it as I have this gaming PC... and a 20.1 inch LCD, so why would I need one? Never the less its tempting!

They keep going on about how its an amazing machine with its cell procesor.

Firstly : How does it compare to PCs at the moment in terms of performance (I dont understand what flops are)

and also how the hell are they going to cool such a massive cpu and gpu?? Did I read right when it said 7 cpus at 3.2ghz?? Thats crazy

TeraFLOPS = Trillion Floating Point Operations Per Second - aka a complex mathematical "sum"..

    for perspective:

In fact, the AMD64 architecture recently made a strong debut on the November 2003 edition of the Top 500 List of supercomputers, capturing sixth place. That position was won by a Linux cluster built with 2GHz AMD Opteron processors at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. That cluster hit a maximum LINPACK performance of 8.051 teraflops (trillion floating point operations per second)
A single PS3 is capable of over 2 TeraFLOPS all on it's own..

(of course it does depend on what type of FLOP it's doing, but the above figure does tally pretty well with the graph Sony were showing at the press conference..)

As for the cpu/cooling issue, stop thinking about pc's for a start, the configuration is completely different..
But basically speaking, it's lots of different specialised processors lumped together in a single chip.

That combined with the manufacturing process (which allows them to shrink more parts into a given area, and run with less power), results in a cooler running chip than your average desktop pc

Timmy, cos I'm such a lovely chap, I've uploaded Sony's press release all about the Cell chip, you can find it in the Press Release Section.

And here's a pic of the little blighter for you too!

You'd think if it's that small... they'd have designed a smaller case

The Cell processes at 218 GigaFLOPS. PlayStation 3 is not a supercomputer.

Cheers Stoo, and cheers Nick.. I feel so special lol

So is the PS3 capable of graphics our PC's can't handle at the moment, or is it on par with what the X800 can do? (or less!)

So PS3 and Xbox 2 are out, I wonder what Nintendo have planned.

Is it sad that the first thing I thought when I saw the PS3 was 'SPIDER-MAN FONT!'. Is it even sadder that the next thing I thought was 'Hmm, that controller looks like something out of Dirty Lesbian Nurses 3'

Yes, your right about the Cell only having a floating point performance of 218 GigaFLOPS but combined with the RSX cores' 1.8 TeraFLOPS processing power, the PS3's total floating point performance is 2 TeraFLOPS.

Undecided on whether i like the look of the PS3 , but lovin' the Killzone 2 trailer
