AMDZone have gone on a quest to get an Athlon 64 X2 4800+ up to 3GHz. They don't make it (I'm such a spoil-sport )
In our quest for 3GHz were found some great tools in the DFI board, Corsair memory, and Thermaltake heatsink with Vantec Tornado fan. Of course Artic Silver 5 was used, and the Antec 550 watt supply. We were disappointed that we could not get benchmarks to complete at 2.9GHz or above, but we are still working on squeezing more stable speed out of the chip. Of course these combinations of components will start adding up to quite a bill, and we feel right now at as low as $546 the X2 4400+ with a full 1MB L2 cache per core is the best dual core value for AMD. We don't yet know the full potential of that CPU as an overclocker, but if it can get 600MHz out of it then it will be quite impressive.
