I wasn't sure if it was a Desktop chip or not, I just remember that the Itanium was 64 bit only, hence why AMD took such a good step with 32 and 64bit support.

Apparently they still make them http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Intel-Itanium-...QQcmdZViewItem

I often wondered about the Itanium. No-one ever made any fuss about it. i must say i also wondered if it was any good at gaming or O/C ing. I had completely forgotten intel made them.
Well to run one you'd need 64bit windows and all 64 bit applications, as it doesn't even attempt to support 32 bit.

Well I'm 100% sure the Itanium 1 was 64-bit only, they've made the 2 support 32 bit as well.

They're a different acrchitecture entirely to a PC. They're aimed at big number crunching servers, say those dealing with nice big databases.Originally Posted by Mattstarky
They can run x86 code, but I'm not sure about AMD64 extensions. Anyway, they aren't that nippy at it, Xeon ~2GHz speeds for x86 code if memory serves. Also, overclocking isn't an issue for a processor that will be running in a mission critical environment.
Don't know if anybody here has been involved in optimising a fully threaded application.
The design of such items involve a great deal of designing and an even greater amount of time invested in it's programming. All of which is no problem when you are working on an application who's destination is the higher end of the market and comes with a price tag to match.
I can't see many home targetted applcations or games being developed for these multicored cpu's - at least not until the relevant development tools evolve to facilitate and simplify this type of development.
Then again what do I know!
Haven't used intel processors now for a few years with AMD are usually cheaper and better performers these days. Would never recommend intel to anyone. As for quad core only just switched to dual core and haven't really noticed a lot yet!
