Your going by the $ to £. Sony will take it from the Euro to £ so that Europe gets roughly the same price. Its a lot better than the old $1 = £1. I'm not surprised by the £425 price tag, its what i was expecting.

    $600=£264?

I pretty sure $600=£316 and thats the US pre tax price.

I was expectin a £400 release as the Euro's convert to £410 but Sony have decided to milk us for that last £15. I can see hardcore gamers buying a PS3 but can anyone seriously see any parent buying it for there kid? It becoming a rich people only console.

Expensive but worth it for the blu-ray drive

I'll buy one to sit next to my 360

its 425, and theres no way iod pay 425 quid for a blue ray drive

HDDVD all the way, PC drives will be 100 quid soon and drop rapidly, and play same quality films

It's still way more than the launch price of the equivalent* 360. (and even more than the 360 will be at the time the PS3 launches, I'll wager)

Whether you can afford it or not is irrelevant - no matter how expensive it is - £425, £700, £1,000 - there will always be someone somewhere with deep pockets who will buy it, but the majority won't.

    * specs aside, it's the premium version of the console. Market wise, it's the same. It's a games console. The PS2 had a DVD player, but no one bought one because it was a DVD player.

not in the UK, but as it happens, that's precisely why people bought the PS2 in japan - it was the cheapest DVD player on the market when it laucnhed.

"The Matrix" on DVD was the ps2's biggest selling software on launch in japan

Well PS3 was always going to win in Japan. M$ can't give 360s away over there. But in Europe there are hardly any HDTVs about anyway so the Bluray attraction is going to be slim.

Really? Didn't know that! That's me told

However, I don't think that Blu-Ray is as much of an exciting new development over DVD, than DVD was with VHS. DVD was much more of a revolution (menus, additional features and options such as 5.1 sound and commentary, no longer having to rewind, better quality fast forwarding/slow motion/pausing, better quality) whereas all blu-ray has going for it from a general marketing point of view is that it's HD, and it can hold longer movies.

Don't forget either that DVD had no competitor.

Aye - Blu-ray / HD-DVD will not immediately sell in incredible quantities like DVD, as they don't offer a giant leap forward. And that means that economies of scale won't happen and therefore they'll not get very much cheaper very soon...

However, as the tech presumably isn't *that* far different from DVD, they can't cost so much to produce in the first place, so there is some hope.
