I think it would be a lot better if the industry put more money into efficiency at the moment. This way, parts last longer and so we don't need to replace so often..

EDIT: ^^^ hahaha yeah, i'll 'recycle' anyone's old pc parts for free - i'll throw in free shipping as well . So.. when you throw out that old FX-60 to make way for conroe, you can depend that i'll find a use for it

It depends. If you mean "greener" as in removing chemicals likely to damage my own health simply from being near the thing, then yes. If you mean green in a wider sense, then no.

Lol. The dumb general public continue to jump on the green bandwagon and pay through their noses for it and feel smug about that. Meanwhile they still fly to The Med/wherever else twice a year and buy a new car every 3 years, but only a fuel efficient one "because its good for the environment adn saves me money"
In truth, most of these idiots that will pay extra frot eh green PC's probably dont even need to buy one - its just their old one is so riddled with spyware its slowed to a crawl.
You dont need an octuple core fifty quadrizillion multihertz megaprocesor and a graphics card that uses a heatsink the size of the titanic to use word and browse the internet occasionally.

Is it possible to work out how much electricity all the components in your PC are using and how to compare with any new components you plan to buy?

Check the specs for each components power ratings.

If I wanted to have an eco-friendly computer I would have bought a VIA with a 60W PSU and perhaps an X300 or something so that I could crawl along in Source. But I (and I assume many others) decided that I wanted power, quite simply so that I could enjoy myself.

Perhaps this is a selfish way of thinking, but isn't it selfish to think that I should deal with pathetic equipment when no-one else is? Shouldn't we be starting big and working our way down to smaller things?

I for one will not be spending an extra £108 for an "environmentally-friendly" computer.
Yes people who are selfish will have no part of it, but in the meantime society is changing as the people who do give a fig make lots of small changes in their lives. The small changes by individuals that in of themselves don't make any big difference but they all add up.

    Its a bit like evolution

It's kind of sad, but true, that many people are not willing to spend a bit more cash in order to help extend the life of the planet just a bit longer. Yes there are many other things that destroy the Earth as many pointed out; for example, the massive power consumption of PCs. But ultimately it's one more thing that could help that some just don't find it necesary to do. I would bet the same people that wouldn't pay more for a 'greener' machine, do not recycle either. An argument might be something like "Well it's not going to effect me, I don't care if the Earth dies. I'll be gone before anything actually happens." But it's not always about this generation. What about your kids and their kids alike?

It's clear things are going to have to change sooner rather than later if humans are going to continue living. I for one am all for paying the extra bucks to cut down on the polution just a smidge. No, this plan will not save the world alone, but it's just something else that can help.

You have, I'm assuming, actually noticed the survey was to do with hazardous chemicals, and had *nothing* to do with power consumption? The "greener" devices mentioned probably use exactly as much power, or even more.

Edited, don't know what happened. Must of lost my train of thought. Besides, if you noticed the beginning of the sentence, you would realize I was refering to the *other* things that harm the Earth reguarding the use of computers "as stated by others."
