Company Of Heroes follows the story of the Allied forces as you land at Omaha Beach on D-Day and then fight your way out of the beachhead and into Normandy before eventually liberating the entire area, giving the Allies a firm footing in Europe.

Nice review. You need a shot of the V2 going off in there somewhere though

Thats just an awesome explosion and I think the patch fixed the shield bug(well I haven't seen it since then)

It’s worth noting that all these missions are based on exclusively US Army actions, even though the British, Polish and French were just as heavily involved.
Nono, the USA was the only country to fight the axis powers in the war, anything else is just our attempts to steal some of there glory.

theres so many examples of this in games and films, sometimes going as far as to change the nationality of people in order to make a good-o'l-fashioned patriotic american story.

You mean like the brave American pilot who single handedly defeated the Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain, as per Pearl Harbour?

Or, you could take modern history as a cue with Blair famously telling us all how America stood shoulder to shoulder with us in the Blitz...

    Ah well.

If I'm honest, Company of Heroes does only focus on the US forces part in the action, which perhaps is a fairer way of arguing it... but even Call of Duty had major British sections... replete with Jason Statham giving us a nice British accent to tell us we're under fire...

Ho hum, I suppose it's waiting in the wings for a Company of Heroes sequel or add-on pack...

Might be trying of a demo in the next couple of days. Though I had the same symptons (gaming till 3am) playing Age of Mythology, I never really liked combat RTS games. But that's maybe because I'm too used to games like Call of Duty, Counterstrike and Unreal.

It has to be said this review at least lets me try the demo version, whilst I didn't bother previous games.
Careful what you wish for, you might receive it...

    It's well worth it.

Espesh if you can find the Dawn of War bonus pack bundle. You get Warhammer 40K: Dawn OF War AND the Winter Assualt expansion pack for it.. all bundled up with the nice spanky new Company Of Heroes.

Kiss goodbye to going to bed before 4am!

I agree, it can be time consuming to make lots more models and I would rather they kept those costs for concentrating on other things in the game and maybe add further races later a la Relics own Dawn of War.

It does annoy me sometimes about the US rough riding over History in that way but the Americans I have met know the contribution they made and we made and its most important that we were all in it together! And lets not forget that they did put an awful lot more manpower into the mainland Europe invasion than us and equipment so you would see more of it in games!

Hmm, mebbe, but in the absence of any figures to back that up, I'll concede that point... though I might be pedantic enough to argue that proportionately, per capita, the other Allies were far more committed.

But then I always have that good old fall back of how unbelievably late the US were in getting stuck in...

Ah well, just goes to show how Hollywood and popular culture can mist History.

Nice review, but - these aren't in-game screenshots are they?

I don't mean because they're so good graphically, indeed that's how I hope the game looks on my C2Duo rig, but there's no sign of an interface, no sign of highlighting of selected units, etc. etc. Lots of pictures I've seen here and elsewhere have looked more like a FPS viewpoint than an RTS - can you really zoom in and pitch for the soldier's view?

I've seen a number of reviews of Company of Heroes now, and only one has shown the interface. I just assume that if there isn't one screenshot definitely mid-game showing the interface and everything, then none of the screenshots have come from the actual game in-play which means they could be promotional shots, cut-scenes, etc. If they are in-game, why did you crop off the interface?

I just find a lack of definite in-game shots makes a review less reliable. Just something I wanted to say. But I am still waiting to buy this game!

You can move the camera by holding ALT and moving the mouse. I'm presuming the interface was disabled someway, most games allow it in the command line.

Those are in game shots, but the interface has been removed by the publisher.

Seriously, I wouldn't EVER knowingly stick up pre-rendered stuff without telling you.

I used these screens as they best showed off the game.

I did think to check before publishing the review and, having played CoH at THQ, it really can look that good if you have the oomph to power it.

Very much enjoying the game. I'd definitely agree it feels a bit like a re-skinned DOW at times, but as DOW is one of the best games of the last 2 years, that's hardly a bad thing .

The main performance killer for me is the trees - for some reason, as soon as there's a tree on screen I start getting almost slideshow figures. Too many leaves to draw? It's odd because Oblivion, which let's face it has far superior looking trees, doesn't get to those kind of framerates _ever_ - even in deep forest with loads of trees, grass and spell effects waving around. Maybe Relic just can't program trees properly?

Well, I've completed CoH, so I opened up the shiny new copy of DoW that came with CoH and I'm replaying that now... when I have the time! (Which is why I was having a crack at 2.30 this morning!)
