Post ATI's Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition GPU

It was a bit of a pain in the ass to get one, I didn't enjoy the black ops drop into Canada in the dead of night, covered in black paint, but the result was worth it.

R420 is what NV40 brought to the table in terms of performance, amplified, especially at its maximum AA mode. My 'ohmygod fast' exclamation on the second page really doesn't do X800 XT justice, it utterly obliterates anything that's gone before it when maximum respective AA modes are enabled, current 6800 Ultra included.

Then we come on to its form factor. You simply cannot ignore small PCB size, lower than 9800 XT power draw, no need for two power connectors, single slot cooler profile and cool running. You can run an X800 XT or PRO in a Shuttle XPC and that's all the confirmation you need of its excellent engineering.

It's impressive in every respect, from performance to form factor and image quality in between.
    Find it in full, here.

ATI are undertaking a complete rewrite of their OpenGL driver as we speak, the merge of the FireGL code not giving them the performance they are after.

Pure OpenGL performance analysis will have to wait for future articles, but on the whole it's fine.

    Absolutely amazing. And very expensive.

Now this looks like a damn good card. 16 pipelines, now thats gotta be worth it, from 8 (on my 9800 Pro) to 16, thats gotta be good. The temporal AA seems pretty nice, there are already a few and i mean only a handful of programs already out that can apparently set Temporal AA for you. Overall, a great review and a must get for any ATi fanboy
