I wanted to approach the overclocking from an enthusiast's point of view, hence the use of a top-notch motherboard, PSU, and cooler.

I've whacked the retail cooler on and the CPU is perfectly stable at 2.7GHz @ 1.52v load, albeit a touch warmer.

Still got a lot more to do (new BIOS to get used to).
1 thing I noticed is that Tarinder says he got his high overclock at 1.54V but CPU-Z screenie shows 1.4V. On mine it's at 1.4V in BIOS but CPU-Z shows 1.44V

CPU-Z isn't showing the correct voltage. It showed 1.4v at all times for me.

ok this seems too good not to give a go, will be finishing my exams this week and been wanting to build a new system for a while now.

amd 3000 venice is pretty much a certain now, will be using corsair 512ddr400ll for a little while until I find a bargain on ram. Need help with mobo, I would like something that is futureproof so might as well go with pci-e, don't need SLI.

what you guys think of the Abit AN8, for £80 I think thats pretty reasonable, or what would be the board you go for atm? cheers

If you get 1 they have just launched the V2.0 version although I don't think there is any UK stock yet.
    I've ordered an AN8 Ultra.

    arthurleung,
I would if I can remember it

iirc it's LBBLE 0516GPDW but when I originally Googled for it there wasn't a single result for that particular complete stepping code. Now there seems to be 2 mentions - 1 saying all of week 16 was bad & the other from a Pole with 2.8GHz @1.48V.
For info mine came from tekheads.

    W00t Mine came today

    Bought mine retail from novatech

    ADA3000DAA4BP
    LBBLE 0517BPEW

So anyone have any comments on these steppings, a quick google, and i have found some stable overclocks with the BPEW steepings however they aren't all that consistent, using voltages from 1.40 to 1.65. Also the most of the result i have seen for the BPEW steepings are 3200+

    Thanks in Anticipation

    Ian

(PS I wont be building system until after exams...)

Ok well no i havent finished my exams.

But after an arduous install it is all working.

Currently got it clocked at 280*9 but i am trying to up the Memory as i cannot find how to do it, i only seem to be able to adjust one or the other not both (cpu and ram).

Its on my a8n sli and other hardware as previously mentioned.

Mine is sitting at 32 degrees whilst the chipset/mobo is at 31! not bad!

I´m kinda new at overclocking and definetely fresh here on this forum. I just wondered what settings on the memorydivider they could have used on that test.

    +12 volt rail question

    Hi Tarinder and fellow overclockers,

Thanks for the review Tarinder! What was the +12 volt reading you were getting to enable you to get that great overclock? My Venice 3000+ won't overclock past 240MHz HTT (Windows XP won't load) and I suspect it's because of my low +12 voltage. My mobo BIOS H/W monitor tells me I'm getting 11.80 volts on my +12 volt rail (give or take .05 volts) and in Windows, MSI's CoreCenter mobo monitor indicates that I'm only getting 11.67 to 11.73 volts on my +12 volt rail; are these low voltages the reason why I'm not able to overclock past 240MHz HTT? Fortunately my PSU (FSP Fortron Source Blue Storm 500 Watt) has ajustable rails so I can up the +12 voltage so what would be the optimal +12 volt setting I need to try for in order to do some major overclocking of my 3000+? Thanks in advance!

    Cheers!

    Bill

    Thumbs up Overclocking issue solved!!!

Well the problem I posted above had nothing to do with my PSU and those voltage reading which I got from my BIOS and from CoreCenter were all inaccurate. I checked my PSU voltages with a voltmeter and there all good (3.3v @ 3.37v; 5v @ 5.05v; 12v @ 12.10v all rails + or - .02 or .03v). The problem was due to a bug with my MSI K8N Neo2 Plat. motherboard most likely having to do with it's BIOS. The bug has to do with SATA 1 & 2 ports not being locked properly for overclocking purposes but fortunately SATA 3 & 4 ports are locked for overclocking so I simply moved my SATA cable from port 1 to port 3 and then I was finally able to boot up my PC FSB @ 240MHz and run 3DMark03 and 3DMark05 without a hickup. I'll soon be overclocking my Venice 3000+ way beyond 240Mhz! I found the answer to my quandry at http://forum.msi.com.tw/ and hopefullly those of you who recently purchased a MSI K8N Neo2 mobo read this post first before trying to overclock!!! That MSI has yet to post a BIOS fix for this or at least informed board owners of this bug in the manual is inexcusable!!!

    Cheers!

    BIOS Settings (Suggestions?)

    Hi All,

Having read this great article, I used it as a basis for the spec of a new PC:

    Athlon64 3000 (Venice)
    Abit AX8 v2.0 Motherboard
    2Gb RAM (2x TwinX1024 - 3200C2PT)
Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro HSF
    Akasa PaxPower 460w PSU

It just so happens that this month's Custom PC (UK mag) had an article on the in's and out's of overclocking. I've read it... I kind of understand it but I'm not completely sure how to apply it to the setting in my particular BIOS.

Without changing ANY other settings apart from the HTT, I can get it about as far as 260MHz giving me a CPU speed of 2340MHz. This is fine but I just get confused with the RAM and voltage settings - how should they be configured as I'm sure I can get this puppy to climb higher!

Does anyone else have (or is familiar with) this combination of CPU/Motherboard that could suggest some settings? Or, can you point me in the direction of a suitable website?

Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
