    Hi Neil.
the best place for your AX8 is probably http://forum.abit-usa.com/forumdisplay.php?f=49

Have you still got most of your BIOS settings on Auto?

    Hi BUFF,

Thanks for the link... I'll go check it out (I couldn't find anything on the UK site and never thought of trying the USA site).

I tried changing the memory timings from AUTO to BY SPD (which I think changes the timings from 2.5-3-3-7 to 3.0-3-3-8 but I could not find the multiplier for the RAM (to adjust in conjunction with the CPU multiplier).

Anyway, I'll go check that forum and see how I get on.

Many, many thanks for replying to a newbie!

I'm not a master of this art but I do know some of the basic rules:

If you want to push it further: Check the following

Make sure the AGP bus is locked (so increases in FSB speed don't affect the Vid Card)

Set HTT to 800 (i.e. x4 mode - Ie FSB 200x4 = 800, but if your FSB is set at 250, then the 800 setting is still running at 1000, it assumes FSB of 200 in the options)

HTT 800 (for upto 250FSB) (in your case allowing 2.5Ghz)
    HTT 600 (for upto 333FSB)

Turn down the ratio of the RAM/FSB to 5:6 (Have the RAM running at 333DDR instead of 400DDR) This is what is probably stopping you at the moment...you're overclocking value RAM - you're lucky you even managed to boot at 230Mhz (460DDR) with it!

Be prepared to increase Vcore ...I believe a generally agreed safe limit is 1.6V...but the lower the better. Please confirm this with others, overvolting can damage your CPU

If you increase Vcore keep a close eye on temperatures

    E3 vs E6

wait so only the E6's are the ones that can run the DDR500? i thoght that was a universal Venice and san diego thing?

from what ive heard, all u need is a BIOS update on most boards to unlock the extra dividers. whether or not the company has taken the time to write a new BIOS for your select board, im not sure. i would browse through the latest updates and see if u can find anything..

Is this true? Will i get the same results with the E6?

How far could i overclock my socket 754 amd sempron without only stock cooling? I want to increase the speed but i don't want to mess about with setting up better cooling etc.

i bought a socket 754 sempron 2800+ ? for a cheap pc (altho it is pretty nippy) and i managed to get only 200Mhz out of it, which is better than nothing

anything else it would either refuse to boot or play silly billy.

take it slow and increase your speeds...
